As most of you know, the Rio Grande is the border between Texas and Mexico. As some of you know, the 2nd largest man-made lake in the U.S. is Lake Amistad (with the Rio Grande, Pecos, and Devils Rivers flowing into it).  And as most of you may NOT know, this is where you'll find the BEST bass fishing in the world.

Maybe now is a good time to give you my WARNING:
Do not expect to spend ONE day on the lake. You'll only cause yourself misery. The lake is TOO BIG, has too many nooks and crannies to fish, too many caves to explore and be in awe of, and it's too relaxing and fun to tease yourself by simply spending one day out there. Look at all of the pictures and their descriptions for more details about the amazing history and beauty that this lake and it's caves hold.

Chris and I had the unique opportunity to go out on the lake with Capt. James Burkeen, Amistad Bassin Adventures. He knows that 65,000 acre lake like his own backyard and he showed us some of his favorite fishing spots, including "James' Paradise." If you're eager to figure out why it's a paradise, don't hesitate to call him at 830.734.9652 for a few days of fishing.

James is good company. He knows all the locals, he provides great conversation and information about the lake, he tells you all about the artifacts, and he has some pretty funny jokes to share too.

This is also the home of The Bassmaster Elite Series, "Battle on the Border," which will be April 10-13, 2008. CLICK HERE to read about the 2007 tournament or go to the Del Rio Chamber of Commerce to see future events for 2008.

Since you'll be spending more than one day out on the lake, you'll probably need to know where to stay for a couple of nights, won't you?

1) Amistad Lake Resort, on outskirts of Del Rio (Recommended by Capt. James)
2) Rancho La Pistola, on the Rio Grande: Contact Larry Scruggs at 210.789.1645 or CLICK HERE for a review on Rancho La Pistola.

Great story, Diana.  Can't thank James enough for such a great time.  There will be video of our Lake Amistad adventure to follow.  Stay tuned.

I've been there once and yes, you need several days to explore.   You got to see much more than I did.  My husband and a group of guys go each year and rent a houseboat for a week.  A guy hunt, no girls allowed.  I'd love to go back though.
