I got a copy of the booklet from a Game Warden at the Outdoor Show in Abilene this past weekend and started looking through it. Did anyone else take notice that Army Corps. Of Engineer lands aren't in the book this year ? Guess I'll have to call the 1-800 number referenced in the book for lands not covered and see what it says.

It's important that more people purchase the Annual Hunting Permit, to help keep these Public Hunting Lands open.

Marvin, I had heard a rumor, at least that's what I'm taking it to be for now, that Aquilla as well as Whitney are going to Bowhunting only. Gathered that info from another website forum but haven't been able to verify it. Will let you know if/when I find out anything.
Don, you're absolutely right about the APHP...alot of guys but it once and if they don't see anything or harvest anything they won't purchase it again. That's the biggest mistake in the world. As these hunting areas go away, we without leases are "screwed".

I started purchasing the permit each year after I found out about it. I have had very limited chances to go out, but I want the opportunity too and for others too have the availability of the Public Hunting Lands.
It is the best spent TEXAS hunting money around ($4.00 per month), except for the cost of our TEXAS Hunting & Fishing License.
If it was doubled ( Lord forbid) we would be crazy to stop purchasing it.
Hunting is getting to be the sport of the rich only, we have to keep it open to those of us that can not afford guided trips and this is the only way I know of.

The new booklet says Aquilla, lake houston and martin dies have been deleted.
Twelve units have limited number of hunters ,716,717,720,721,726,734,736,751,760,1079,1105 and 2338.
Antler restrictions in eleven units.
I started buying the APH about 5 years ago and everytime I get to know an area pretty good they close it.I liked Aquilla and it was the closest one to me about 90 minute drive.I guess I will start going to Alabama creek area now and caddo.

Marvin, haven't went up there yet. A friend of mine who lives in Saginaw mentioned going up there a couple of weeks before bow season starts and taking a look around. I know a couple of people that have hunted there alot and have taken some pretty nice deer out of there.

Marvin, He is the answer to the question I posted on TexasBowhunter.com about Aquilla and Whitney and both of them being bowhunting only this year. Appears by the post that it is true. This is what I was told:
You need to go to the Corp. Project Office at Lake Whitney. They'll give you a permit for Whitney and Aquilla. Went by both places today. I had never been to Lake Aquilla but the water level is extremely low.

I guess Aquilla is out for me I don't use archery for anything. LBJ is so broken up it takes alot of scoutin g to find any game but as dry as it is any water may be the key.Last year I walked around a couple of places and all the creeks and water holes were dry except for the lakes.
Don
LBJ grasslands are north of Decatur and around Alvord.

River hunter welcome to TexasHuntFish!
Here is a link that will help you http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/huntwild/hunt/public/lands/table_contents/
Scroll down the page and you will see the areas near you.
You will need a pdf reader to view the files. You can do a google search for a pdf reader download for free.
Good luck!

Hi guys. In reference to LBJ--I've hunted up there for several years with both bow and gun. It's a hard area to hunt and pattern the deer but it can be done with some ankle express and some fortitude! There are some nice deer up there taken every year with both bow and shotgun or muzzleloader. It's not a type II area, it just required the general license and you apply for a doe permit thru the Forest Service office in Lufkin. This year is the first year they've instituted 'online' applications for doe permits.
Whitney and Aquilla are now both under the auspices of the Corp of Engineers. TWPD did not renew the lease/agreement they had to keep Aquilla this year but thats good for us bowhunters who do know how to hunt either area! And yes, there are tricks to being successfull there!
At LBJ I highly encourage you both to check it out as there's a great regular group from Texas Bowhunters.com that hunt both seasons up there that is friendly, concientous, safe, ethical and true sportsmen.
I won't be there for opening gun but will be there ond off thru the rest of the season. Good luck, Pat

To answer your question river hunter the Aransa Wildlife refuge offers and archery hunt, choke canyon Calighan unit is a great location and the chapparal WMA is another one. The map booklet on-line shows them all and I highly recomend the public hunting permit, there is also alot of access to land north of Rockport and in the Valley for hunting.
