I went out last week and played around a while with a caller I got at Cabelas.  I called for about 1 minute than sat for a couple then called again...repeat...repeat...repeat...nothing.

How long should I call for and then wait for?  I'm in the hill country and was using the jack rabbit call.  I've got it, cottontail, yelping coyote pup, and wounded deer fawn.

I'm assuming that you're hunting coyote hunting. First you have to consider the terrain in which you are hunting. It could be that the sound isn't carrying very well. I know you said hill country but you could still be in a draw or something that's trapping the sound. First I would call for about 4-5 minutes straight and then set for about the same length of time. I would do this for about an hour and if I see nothing or hear nothing the I would switch to one ofthe other sounds and repeat the process. I hope this helps

I use a boombox with a cd or tape and just cover it with a piece of camo cloth. When I call I usually turn the call on but have the volumn down pretty low. I let it run for about a minute or two  and keep a sharp eye out for movement. Then start to increase the volumn but don't turn the tape off. The tapes I have usually last about 10 min and i will let it call all the way thru. Then sit and wait 30 minutes and if nothing shows I pick up and move. The distance I move is determined by the thickness of the cover and the amount of wind. Also, at night the sounds travels much further. I like to move a couple hundred yards if the area allows.

That's how we use to do it up north when we'd go out for Gray/Red Fox at night Gman. Only thing we did different is we'd have a portable speaker and we'd very slowly  move it or point it in a different direction and cover 360 degrees, always worked like a charm.
