I got in the truck Wednesday evening and headed to Dilley.
Got up early Thursday morning and hit the fields. The doves were flying and I was shooting, but not a whole lot were dropping.
Well I did limit out and did get the last three birds I shot at so it ended up better than it started. I dusted a couple so bad that feathers filled the air and almost knocked one in half. Also had the longest shot I ever took at a dove. It must have been close to 60 yards. Dog went about 100 yards on the retrieve.
Got back in the truck and headed over to Rockport for some quacker shooting. Dusty slept the whole way over there and it was well-deserved because she did a lot of running that day.
Dilley is about as good a place as there is in the US to hunt doves.
Got in the room that night and was checking to make sure the choke tube was ok for lead and found that I had been shooting a full choke all day. That explains the long shot and the dusting of a few doves. Also made sure I wasn't going to be carrying any lead shells with me the next morning.
Went about 10 minutes in an airboat and the guide sropped me off at a small island of Rockport the next morning. Set 4 dozen decoys out (dozen mallards, dozen pintails and two dozen teal) and set up in some scrub trees. Ducks were buzzing the decoys before shooting time so I was getting pumped! Just after shooting time, some redheads came in and I missed a few easy shots - as it turned out I couldn't hit hardly anything all day long - just one of those days. Was out there by myself - glad no tsunamis hit the Texas coast that day!!
Later on I called in a large flock of pintails - no easy feat - turned them around twice and had a shot over the decoys - missed three times - just one of those days.
The location was good; the decoy spread was good; the calling was good and the dog was good. Accuracy was terrible all day long - even with the right choke in the shotgun.
Ended up with a Mexican Squealer and a teal -on two pretty difficult shots. Missed passing redheads all day long too...........
I still love to duck hunt down there. It might not have the ducks that Arkansas has but it is a unique place to hunt ducks and I will go back there again!
