DO ANY OF MY FELLOW HUNTERS HAVE ANY PICTURES OF SOME GOOD BUCKS THAT WERE TAKEN IN EAST TEXAS  THEY COULD SHARE WITH US? I HAVE BEEN ON THE SAME LEASE IN WALKER COUNTY FOR 5 YEARS AND HAVE NOT HAD THE CHANCE AT A GOOD BUCK YET (HOPEING THIS IS THE YEAR). JUST SOMETHING TO KEEP MY HOPES UP FOR THE UP COMING YEAR.

Yes it was taken in the Boggy Slough hunting club area. I have seen several big buck first hand from East Texas. Here is another big deer from East Texas.

thanks, those are outstanding deer would love to get on a lease with that kind of game management. looks like they let them grow to a ripe mature age.

Craig, you can find bucks like these on the public hunting lands in Northeast Texas. The first buck was shot off of Boggy Slough Hunting Club but it is low fenced and bordered by public property, second buck was shot on private land that was bordered by National Forest. If you are willing to put in the time to scout these kind of bucks can be shot off of the public lands but don't expect to kill one every year. My last good buck from public lands came in 1998 but I keep hunting because I know there is another one there for me.

I hear you scarlis. I will be back hunting the National Forest next season as I will not be back on my lease. I scouted some new areas last summer and never got back to the forest to hunt. Actually we kind of got turned around and were without our compass and stumbled on to a great area. Remember, if you go to the National Forest take that compass into the woods every time. This new area has National Forest, State and Private land which all joins together. Man, the deer sign was everywhere, old rubs and plenty of trails. I can't wait for bow season.

public land can produce some excellent bucks if you go out like yourself and put the time in and get away from the crowds, hope you have good succcess there.

I'm hunting public land this year. I normally hunt my lease and make a few trips throughout the season to public land. but this year I decided to hunt public land exclusivly. eastern turkey at davey crocket in april, the forest and lake whitney during archery, Unit #116 gun season and lake meridith NRA during Mule deer season.

Good luck and happy hunting!

Well Budd, we will be hunting in each others laps. The place I described above is on the back side of  Unit 116.  Do you usually stay in the NF camp just down CR524 or do you camp on Unit 116? We usually stay in the NF camp, often in the first camp on the left or at the pipeline. We are also planning a trip to lake Meridith for Mulies next year. Have you hunted the Meridith property?  We are going to pull my camper down for a week long stay. Are there camper hookups or bathrooms in the area? I have never hunted Lake Whitney, is it a good area? We bow hunt the DCNF with pretty good success.

Gman I usually stay at #116 and I'm planning on doing my turkey hunting on the pipeline. I know the area you are talking about where state, federal and private land meet. lake meridith there are no hookups or electricity at any of the parks there. they have primative camping only. it gets real cold there in november. this past season I passed on several nice muleys and whitetails opening weekend and then didn't see anything the next weekend. opening weekend is the best time to be there by far. here are some pics from last year at lake meridith.

Did you see many people?  Is this up by Amarillo?

Does anyone know of a good place for hogs that's public and available year round?

Those are cool pictures, looks like its spot and stalk at Lake Merridith. Classic Muley hunting. If you go up this year let me know because I really want to make the trip even if it is for opening weekend.

It is open to the public like the National Forest. I have been trying to go to Lake Meredith for the last couple of years, it just never comes together for me and my buddies. I would imagine that the area is open for bow season but the Mule deer season is only a 9 day season which is in Novenber so you would be competing with the gun hunters. I am definitely up for a trip on opening weekend and maybe even extend the weenend into a Monday or Tuesday if there is some other hunting to do like duck or quail. The lake is supposed to be excellent walleye, whitebass and smallmouth fishery. Here are a couple of links if you haven't checked out the area.  http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/fish/infish/lakes/meredith/lake_id.htm  ,  http://www.nps.gov/lamr/

Sorry it took so long to get back to ya'll. Opening weekend is not as bad as you would think, and actually if you find a good canyon to hunt the other hunters will eventually push the deer to you. last season I saw about 5 trophy class whitetail the first morning. the 2nd morning I watched a guy in the canyon below me shoot a 10 point mulie. I went back the 2nd weekend and saw nothing at all. meridith is just below Amarillo and it is just like national forest show up where orange and hunt. G-man I will be going on opening day of general season.. archery season will be spent at dcnf

Good luck and happy hunting!

I am planning on being at Meredith on opening weekend of muledeer season and in DCNF for bow and gun openers. Where do you camp when you go to DCNF? We usually stay at the camp that is just off of Forest Service Road 524.

Camping at Ratcliff Lake off HWY 7 is real nice. They also have great fishing. The nearest store is a Chevron/General Store. If you can't find any supplies you want, the best store in the area in Curry's which is the Exxon station in Kennard (less than 5 miles) west on HWY 7. Also - if you are hungry - there is a little Gas Station/Cafe called "Thomas's Corner" next door to Kennard Highschool on HWY 7. They are generally regarded as the best food in the area. There is a seasonal cafe called "The Feed Bag" which may or may not be open.

Finally - if you really want a good meal - 20 miles west on HWY 7 at the intersection with the Loop in Crockett is a real nice cafe and the only Bar for an hour in every direction. That is also the nearest hospital (East Texas Medical Center) and the nearest Super Walmart (a couple hundred yards north on the loop when you come in on HWY 7). The Walmart hunting department is surprisingly stocked with almost everything you might think of needing.
