Are there any good public duck hunting places in Texas?  If so where are they located and how do you get on them?  Do you need a permit?  Boat?  Any info would be helpful.

Thanks,

Danny

Danny,

The public hunting land that we were talking about bow hunting is located around O.C. Fisher Lake. You can duck hunt there as well as deer hunt so there is you duck lease for next year and it only cost $40.00 a year.

Richland -Chambers reservoir, Lake Livingston and Lake Conroe are three pretty good places to hunt, although you got to take the bitter with the sweet when on public lands - someone can and offtimes does set up near you and just as the ducks start to circle your decoys, they shoot and scare them off or try to sky bust them as they are on their approach ......... So be prepared to have a higher frustration level than hunting on private land.

Is the O.C.Fisher land still open out in San Angelo for duck hunting .And if it is can you still acess it by land or must you have a boat. Years ago we could drive in to a certain point and set up a temp blind ?decoys .Is this area still avaiable?

Are you heading up there this year?  I'm in Austin and I would love to find some kind of decent duck hunting around here.  I haven't been able to lately and really miss it.

Is there duck hunting at Granger Lake?

Allen, Yes, there is duck hunting around Granger Lake. I live in Austin as well, and that is the closest place to hunt for sure. I've also just started hunting on Fort Hood in Killeen and it looks like we may have some decent duck hunting out there. There are also some areas on the Colorado River right here in town that you can duck hunt on but I can't get the local game wardens to accurately describe which sections. It seems to be a grey area of sorts. There are a ton of ducks in there. A little further out I hear Somerville WMA has some decent duck hunting.

Maybe we can meet up in Dec or Jan.  I would love to find a place to shoot a few around Austin and take my lab out to.  I've got decoys and am ready.  Granger would be nice but I wonder if it's overcrowded?

It rarely gets crowded out there for some reason. I don't know what the deal is. If you go during the week you would have the place to yourself practically. There are also a few lesser known spots that can heat up during certain times of the season. I'd definitely be up for a hunt once we get some cold weather.
