We've been feeding it all year and the deer seem to love it. Bucks look really good this year also.

Are you feeding it in a spin cast feeder? I have heard that it can plug one up. I haven't seen the product personally but have read about it and would like to try it.

I not sure if we are using the golden deer nuggets but I know it is record rack that we use.
Yes, we have it in spin feeders. We have had a problem once when some moisture got into the feeder but otherwise we aren't having any problems. One thing to remember, we mix 70% corn and 30% record rack. If you put just the record rack in the spin feeder it will probably clog easier. Our lease is just 15 minutes from the house so it is easy for us to stop by and check the feeders so a clog is not that big of a deal with us.

We started feeding Record Rack this past spring. The 16% protien pellet. We mix it with corn, about 75/25 rr to corn. These are free choice feeders and they go through 700 lbs in about 20 days. I have pictures of as many as 5-6 deer around a feeder of RR. I talked to a man who uses RR in his deer raising program. He said that you will first see a major jump in body weight and by the third year, a major difference in antlers.
We are sold.

Tom were was that picture taken?
I am curious how you guys who use Record Rack feel about it compared to the other products? I started out trying an off brand protein pellet by Evergreen Feeds mixed with a flavored powder, but did not have any luck getting the deer to eat it. I later switched to Purina Deer chow, which hogs and raccoons seem to really like, but not the deer. Then I started using a Deer Chow mix that had about 25% corn and it seems that maybe because of the drought the deer have finally started eating it. So I am curious if you guys have any thoughts about the other brands of proteing pellets and why you guys have gone with Record Rack to feed the deer?

I am looking at using the Golden Deer Nugget because Record Rack claims that it can be used in a spin cast feeder with no problems and it is obviously better for the deer than corn. I have had bad luck with regular protien pellets in a spin cast feeder. I talked to a man at the feed store where we buy our corn at and asked if he was familiar with the product. He said it is close to the same physical size as corn but it is round shaped. Also he said that if it is raining and the wind blows the rain hard enough, it can get wet and plug the thrower. In short I want to use a product that is good for the deer but at the same time not clogging the feeder.

TXArch12,
That pic was taken in Sutton County/Crockett County. The ranch sits on the county line. It is about 25 miles southwest of Sonora.
Here are a few more pics.

Another pic, and to answer your question about why we decided on RR, I talked to several others who had used it and was impressed with their people that I met at Hunters Extravaganza in Ft. Worth.

As you can see from these pics, the deer like this stuff. We hope that some of these bucks will have the chance to feed on the protein for several more years, so that we can see just what this stuff will do!

Tom,
Those are some great pics! It is nice to see the development of their racks. I used to hunt on a 6000 ac. lease about 25 miles south of Sonora that I was told was owned by the owner of the Caverns of Sonora. It was such a great place to hunt. Do you do any hunting out in the Athens area?

TXArch12,
I don't hunt right here at Athens, I do have a place between Palestine and Buffalo that I can hunt on. Went there this past Saturday trying to stick a pig. No luck.
We enjoy hunting at Sonora, it is so much different from East Texas. If a person hasn't had the chance to hunt out west, they don't know what they are missing. The only draw back is the drive.

The drive is long and the gas is expensive, but it is definately worth it! The last deer I shot with a rifle was down there in Edwards county on December 30, 1995. Back then I was in high school, playing football, but still somehow managed to make it down there at least every other weekend. After we lost that least I only went hunting every once in a while (when I got invited to hunt with friends) for a few years because I could not find a place to hunt that compared. Hunting down there definately got me spoiled. I finally could not go without having a place to hunt, so for the past 5 years I have been hunting at my uncle's 260 acres 20 miles SE of Athens. It is nice that I pretty much have the place to myself, but the hunting does not compare. I hope you guys have a great season - can't wait to see some photos.

TXArch12,
Is your uncle's place around Brushy Creek? We hunted at Montalba for several years on a real small place, 150 acres. I have seen several real nice deer come from that place and we had one weekend where 5 bucks were taken, the smallest being a 7pt.
Not getting personal, but where do you live now and what do you do?
I teach for Trinity Valley Community College, and have been here in Athens for 20 years.
Hope you have a good season as well, we will be at Sonora the first weekend in Oct to bowhunt, will check the game camera as well.
Take care!
Here is another picture!

thanks for all the info. and pics. we are going to try the Golden Nuggets mixed with a little corn and see how it works in our spin cast feeders. We will probably try the protien pellet in the protien feeders after season.

Well, we got the feeders filled last weekend. We mixed the record rack golden deer nuggets with corn and soybeans. I am a little worried about them plugging because a couple of them plugged immediately, but with a little shake of the feeder they were fine. Hopefully it was just a fluke thing, we'll see.

Well, I talked to the rancher yesterday and he said the feeders are plugging. He said you could shake the feeders and the feed would start flowing again. He seems to think we can lower the spiner plate and that would allow the feed to flow more freely. I am heading up this weekend to try this. I hope this works.

Yes, lowering the spinner plate should work. we keep our plates about an inch to inch and a half from the bottom of the funnel.

Went yesterday. lowering the spinner plate would not work. We had to router the hole in the bottom of the feeder to make the opening bigger. seems to be working great now.
