HELP

How do you set a snare to catch coyotes without catching deer or other animals? We don't have hogs, so that is not a concern. I am starting this thread for two reasons: 1) I think this is a skill that is good to know whether for wildlife management or wilderness survival; 2) I think this is a practice that should not be "experimented", but rather studied prior to use so as not to harm non-targeted species. Yes, I am making the assumption that the size of loop and the elevation of the loop depends on the targeted species. If I am wrong, even more reason to respond to this thread.

Also, please upload photos or drawings of different ways to build and install a snare. Pictures say 1000 words, especially in this case.

Someone sent me this email months ago:

Here's some pic's of a few snare sets I have, You asked me about deer getting in them ,and the best answer for that is to use a break away on your snare , works for livestock too it is simply made to break away or bend at a certian load, or you can just make it incovienant for a deer to go through by leaning a nice size branch or log in the way.

I just put a deterant up so a deer would walk around it instead of through it. I have been using snares for about 7yr's now and have a lot to learn yet. The coyote's to me are a lot easier to catch in a snare than a leg hold trap and a lot quicker and easier to set and alot less chance of a random catch. You must target a snare for a specific animal determined by size of loop and height off the ground, you can also make the set lethal or non-lethal if there are domestic animals around the area. I have caught a lot of coyote's that were unharmed by the snare when I arrived. Hope this helps!

I'm partial to lead poisoning for coyotes myself.

I caught a skunk by the testicals in a leg hold trap once. It probably wished that I had used lead poisoning instead,Huh, Big mIke

As for the snare, I lean toward one way funnels into bait.

After thought! If you have a baited funnel for a main snare, from that point survey all the possible escape routes should there be a whole family of coyotes along. Place snares in each one. When one of them gets caught, the rest scatter muy pronto and run through snares with no hesitation getting caught in the process. I did this one time with leg hold traps. It snowed some and next day thawed some and that night I caught one coyote and the trap held. Four others had sprung only to be slowed down by the ice build-up.

Sweet plan, Bill.  Like a huge snare fest for 'yotes!  If anybody sets up something like that, some video cameras in strategic places would be priceless!

And even though it is a skunk, I'd think a testicle snare would be considered animal cruelty.  : )

I do plan on setting up five cameras with the at least two set to video, and three set for 3 photo burts every 5 minutes. But if I do that without the perfect snare set up, I will have just wasted 20 C batteries (not cheap) and several hours. Does anyone have detailed instructions or photos they want to share?
