Never seen one myself. Piebald just means different colors (usually black and white) spotted or blotched -- some areas are pigment-free while others are not. It is manifest in lots of animals, from snakes and birds to dogs and horses. Definitely a unique trophy!

That is very neat. I'd love to see one like that. It's amazing what is really out there, and we as hunters get a great chance to see it!

Matthew hit it right on the head. It's nothing more than multi colored with the main colors being a "natural" color to the animal normally mixed with white patches. I can be other colors also. I have never seen one first hand but have read about the studies done on them. It is not a common occurence but at the same time it's not very rare either. It is a beautiful animal. I would definitely do at the very least a shoulder mount and take plenty of pictures.

Thats a nice deer anyway you cut it...i've never seen one in person but i know from the extensive magazines in the bathroom that there are 3 basic different kinds of abnormalities in deer caused by a recessive gene;..piebald-as above, sometimes called pinto, but having white and black/brown splotches, the melanistic-which is a very dark brown, and the albino-total absence of pigment making it white including white eyes and nose. There is another which is commonly mistaken for albino, where a deer is totally white except the eyes and nose this is believed to be a genetic mutation.
Don't ask me why this kind of minutia sticks in my head!

When I was stationed in Maryland at Ft. George G. Meade in the mid 70's I saw a piebald doe. From her legs up including half her body was white with brown splotches. One characterist that really set her off was that her ears were giangantic and floppy. This took place during archery season and she came through at about 50 yards. Would have liked to taken her but won't ever shoot that far.

We had one on our lease that had a solid white ear but no other abnormal spots. I believe it has something to do with albinoism.
Keep yer eyes peeled!

All great conversational pieces when up on the wall or even as a full body mount. Cool deer.
Don't be a duck.
