Rut dates?

Anyone have a good idea about when the rut starts and peaks in the Coke or Tom Green area? From what i've researched it seems like in mid November is when it starts but there's not much information about that area that I can find.  I will be hunting in the Blackwell or Bronte area this year with my young son and I would like to see as much activity as possible.

I've hunted around both those area before (Blackwell and north of Robert Lee)...you ought to have a lot of fun out there.  There are also some pretty decent bucks in that neck of the woods when food is plentiful.  From what I've seen up there in normal years William's date is about right.

You may already have seen this, but here's something from TPWD that will give you a feel for rut times in that general area.  You may already know this too, but a lot of things affect the timing of the rut: rainfall, availability of food, weather, and some even think moon phases, so there easily could be a two week swing or more on when the rut starts and peaks.  For example, the last couple of years where we've hunted around Eldorado (about 80 miles south of you) the rut has been strung out because of lack of water and food...with no real peak.  Bucks were actually running does a full 4 weeks before the normal peak!  I'd also think about making contact with the TWPD wildlife biologist that handles the specific area you're hunting as well as the local game warden.

Hope this helps.

I have hunted all over that area and if you want your son to see a lot of deer then bow season and youth season the bucks are still in bachelor groups and there will 5 to 10 of them together per group depending on your populations, but as far as the rut goes depending on the weather it always seemed as it was a light switch during thanksgiving week they go nuts running the does ragged. Awesome job getting your son involved in the outdoors!

I appreciate everyone's input and i'll definately take any advise.  Should be a fun season taking him out this year.  I'm a little unsure whether to go during the opening week of season when the deer are not that pressured or wait to get closer to Thanksgiving during the rut.

Depends on the size of the lease and hunting pressure.  If you're hunting a smaller tract or one that has significant hunting pressure I'd lean towards opening day.  I'd also wait to make that decision (if I could) until I knew a little more how good the food and water situation was going to be out there.

I've been hunting 8 miles northwest of Blackwell for over 30 years -- the rut usually occurs the same time every year.  If you are looking for lots of activity id recommend going the first two weekends of the season. For the first two weeks of November, the bucks are out actively chasing/seeking. This is when i've had the best luck rattling. The rut usually peaks Nov 14th and the bucks seem to disappear into the thick mesquites and cedars with the does to breed.  Rattling has been less productive for me during this time, but have been using doe estrus bleat calls and estrus urine around the peak and have been able to pull bucks out of the thick cover. Around thanksgiving is good too.

Hope this helps, good luck.
