NEWTOWN, Conn. -

The National Shooting Sports Foundation Board of Governors has announced that its longest-sitting member, Robert W. Behn, is retiring. Behn, the former president of Marlin Firearms and senior advisor at Remington Arms, was elected to the NSSF Board of Governors in 1980 and has served terms uninterrupted for three decades.

The NSSF Board of Governors is responsible for overseeing the strategy and finances of the National Shooting Sports Foundation, the trade association for the firearms industry. "Bob Behn has been a friend to us all at NSSF through challenging times and good times, and his sage advice has always been welcome and on-target," said NSSF President Steve Sanetti, who served with Behn on the NSSF Board of Governors for many years prior to joining NSSF.

Behn held many leadership positions while on the NSSF Board of Governors, including at the time of his retirement, co-vice chairman. "It's been an honor to serve with so many distinguished industry leaders on the NSSF Board of Governors and to have played a part in promoting, protecting and preserving the firearms industry, an industry that has meant so much to me and my family," said Behn.

Said Robert Scott, the board's current chairman, "Bob's industry experience and acute business sense was greatly valued by board members in their efforts to make the best decisions for the National Shooting Sports Foundation. He was respected by his fellow board members, and we'll miss him."

Behn spent 39 years with Marlin Firearms and was the company's president from 1997 to 2007. After Marlin was acquired by Remington Arms, Behn was named senior advisor at Remington and was asked to continue serving on the NSSF Board of Governors representing Remington.

Behn also was a board member of the Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers' Institute, the standards-setting organization for the firearms and ammunition industry.

A resident of Connecticut and a lifelong sportsman, Behn serves as member of the board of directors of Hammonnasset Fishing Association.
