Anyone know anything about this one?

Lamar

212 Texas buck... and it's not from South Texas!

These are pictures of the buck taken on Mike Gibson's 50,000-acre JY Ranch between Guthrie and Paducah.  Mike had seen the deer over the last few years and had been eyeing it until  he grew to over 200. Mike shot this monster buck with a open sight Sharps .45 cal. Rifle at 150 yards.  What an impressive shot!  This is a free ranging deer.  There are NO high fences here. But I have a sneaky suspicion he does feed heavy protein year round.

The buck scored a 212 and has at least 18 scoreable points.

Do you really need hight fence if you have 50,000 acres?

A deer that big up there wouldn't surprise me, though I hadn't heard about it.  After having lived east of Guthrie for a couple years it wouldn't surprise me either if he DIDN'T feed protein at all. There are some simply amazing bucks along that part of the Brazos, a number of them non-typicals.  But, the typicals aren't bad either...one friend of mine took a 150 B&C 10 point from up there, another (who doesn't hunt) let his grandson shoot a 155+ 12 point from the same area.  There's almost always a boomer or two from Knox or King counties in the TPWD awards.

Of number of large ranches with low hunting pressure, not to mention a one buck limit, is a good recipie for big bucks.

By the way, the only JY Ranch I know up there is run by the Masterson family.  maybe Mike is a relative.  There also used to be a Mike Gibson that ran the 6666 for awhile, another real big ranch in the area.

The guy who'd know on this site is Randy Hollar...he's from near there.

Masterson Ranch owned by the Bill Masterson family and managed by Robert Masterson. I would be very surprised if any protein is fed out on this ranch. Having some land in this area I have seen some pretty impressive bucks taken off other ranches in the area such as the Pitchfork,Tongue River and 6666. There are no high fences up in this neck of the country.........just good wildlife management without all the modern tools....I think the protein is in the red soil...I was raised in Munday and Knox county is also providing some really good hunting oportunities . The one buck tag helps a lot and we are finally getting to take out a few does and spikes during the off season. All looks good if the rains keep up.

Randy - Assuming that email is factual, that couldn't be the Mike Gibson that used to manage the 6666 could it?  Its been over 15 years since I've seen him, and while the picture does look a little like him (a hat can hide a bunch of differences) Mike sure wasn't that heavy back then.

Don't know what to say. I thought Mike was still at the 6666. Maybe I will see Monte at the reunion in Dumont this August and get some info......

ANTLERS

Well guys this is my input. I hunted a small place across the road from JJ Gibson's ranch and yes it has some awesome deer. JJ Gibson's is the father of Mike. JJ ran the 6666 ranch for years for Ms. Ann and was given and bought the land that makes up the Gibson place (this is what I was told by our land owner) it has another name but i can not find it or do i remember it. I talked to Mike one day on the road about leasing some or all of the ranch. He was very nice and said no hunters wanted. They did not feed protein on this ranch when I hunted next door. I use to sit in a tall tower with a good spotting scope and watch the deer on his ranch in a big wheat field and man did I see some monsters. That's my two cents worth. Good hunting an shoot a monster!!
