QUESTION

Ok, kind of new to the hog hunting art and need some help. I will give the set-up and hopefully someone can offer some advice.

I have a ranch just due east of Centerville (approx. 300acres) and a hog problem. They are tearing up the property and ruing the cattle grazing area. I have numerous times posted up at dusk and dawn with no luck. I have lured and not lured and came to the conclusion that are smelling me before I even step on the property.

Lures I have used: Hog wild mixed with crack corn. Sweet corn. I have placed these near the areas that they are rooting up.

Layout of the area: theres a creek that runs through the property with a rise in the land on both sides. On one side is heavy thicket with trees which is my guess where they are at. On one side of the property is family land and the other side of the fence is a game hunting lease.

Equipment: model 88 lever action .243

I myself havent seen them but on numerous occasions people who take care of the property for me have seen them and guessing about 25-35 heads of them with a few hitting the 250lbs mark. On this last trip I walked the entire property and found numerous hog track, puma tracks and hog drops. I placed the hog wild/crack corn mix in one area and hunted it that night with no luck. I layed the mix that same night and came out before sunrise and still nothing. The mix wasnt even touched.

What am I doing wrong and any help is greatly appreciated.

My advice would be to set up just a hanging feeder or a hog pipe with some sort of light, either solar powered or other means, but be prepared to have better success in the evening or after dark.  Corn works good in the hog pipe with some diseal mixed in, you can also find fresh rooting areas and bury diseal corn in 2-3ft holes with a post hole digger, but give the bait at least 3-5 days to work, the hogs have to stumble across the bait then hope to attract them back after more bait is set out.  Best tactic is to place a trail cam on the bait to photo what and when is hitting the bait, then hunt at the time they are hitting!!!

man you are in an area that is full of hogs. hunting them can be tough, setting up a feeder will draw some in but they will get smart to it. I personally like to stalk them it is much more effective for me. e-mail me and we can talk about more tips.

thanks guys for the advice, I would try to get video or pictures of them but the area that they are rooting up is in a low spot of a hill and nothing to put the camera on. Its a large area with no trees. I guess I could put a post hole in and secure it to that but its a rather large area.

I hunt a 680 acre place in Freestone county.  When we first started there we found 3 spots (there are only 2 hunters) where hogs had a trail they used regular.  We baited near those trails with corn and diesel to feel them out.  We buried this mixture 3' deep, mixed with dirt and packed, at each spot and scattered some on the surface from the trails to the buried spots.  It took a couple of days, but the next weekend we found holes 3' deep at each location.  We continued this for several weeks and had the same results even though we had several kills each week.  I then picked one of the spots and put up a feeder and 150 yds from that I put an open stand 8' high.  Each time I go I scatter more diesel/corn mix on the surface, and in 2 years there have been very few times I have gone home empty. The other 2 spots have no feeder and we have to redo the baiting each time.  It usually takes a day for the hogs to find it, but they keep coming back to check it out.

As an added attraction, I put a 3' piece of PVC pipe with a few holes anchored to a t-post about 10 yards from the feeder.    The hogs first got the caps off the end, and we had to put self tapping screws on them.  And then they were able to force the knots loose in the ropes.  So  we looped a cable through a hole in the cap with cable clamps on the inside of the caps.  This has worked well.  You will have to empty the pipes occasionally when the corn gets moldy from getting wet before all the corn is eaten.

My game camera tells us that more than one group will come almost every night, at different times, from dark to early morning.  I've  tried to stay awake all night so I could get more kills, but after I have 2 or 3 on the ground I'm not quite as excited to keep awake and  I quit.  We have dropped as many as 9 in one weekend.  That time 7 of them were over 150 lbs.

I hope this helps get you started.  Good luck and hunt safe.
