Has anyone owned land on this ranch or hunted this area? just curious about the wildlife in this area. I know its close to Meyer Canyon Ranch and have heard mixed reviews abut this area. Any help would be greatly appreciated. God Bless!

There are alot of ranches in West Texas that have gone in the direction of this ranch.  We have seen quite a few larger ranches subdivide up into 100 to 200 acre ranchettes in the last ten or so years.  I don't know if this is good or bad.  It can be good if there is some sort of management plan or agreement with all the landowners of these ranchettes that adjoin each other.  If not, then you could have a real problem with over hunting and a negative impact on the deer herd.

I hunt at the Val verde-Terrell county line. There is a old ranch that was broke up on the Pumpville road. The Game Wardens told me for every one deer that walks thru there are four bullets on his ass. I drove to the area. What I saw was scary. I could see approximately 500 acres and counted twelve stands in that area.

Pouching is a big problem. Not only on the property you own, but the area. Several years ago we asked the Game Wardens to set up a decoy. They did and were successful at catching poachers. All I can say is be careful. No deer is worth being hurt or killed.

i, along with a buddy bought some land right behind paint mare ranch in meyers canyon, we have seen some nice, good sized does and bucks both white tail and mule, we do not shoot just anything, we are trying to manage the property for the better quality deer. this was the first season hunting there. the possibilities are there.

Me and my buddy own property in Meyers Canyon. Which we purchase last year. In fact our tract is in front of Paint Mare. The positive I have see is that there is gate to the entrance of the Ranch we is locked 95 percent of the time so not just anybody can waltz in. You do see alot of blind but to my amazement I did not see alot of hunters the past season. Not sure about other areas in the Ranch but we killed a nice 10 point buck and a 14 pointer and saw a few more bucks we couldnt get a shot off at. We saw several does and lots of big bucks tracks. So far my buddy and think it's pretty good hunting. But would venture to say that it all depends on neigboors and type of land whether its flat or if you have draws etc...

Good Luck.

Also, I forgot to mention that during the hunting season the game wardens were out in full force. The only thing that bothered me about it was that if you do not have a gate to your property they come driving up on you all hours of the afternoon evening and at night. Not everyday of course.

I own two tracks in Paint Mare. I bought the first one in 06 and the second last year. My place is flat land but has enough cover to hold a few whitetails. The hunting has been average but I only get to hunt about 10 days a year. The hunting pressure on the deer has been very noticeable over the last few years as the deer are much more spooky now then in 06.
I just wanted a piece of hunting land to call my own and so far haven’t regretted the purchase.
I would like to meet some of the other land owners in Myers Canon and Paint Mare because I end up out there hunting alone most of the time.
The picture is of my son with the first buck we took in Dec. 06.

Hey Jim, which tracts do you own? I am leaving Friday morning to look at some tracts in Paint and Meyers. Give me your number and we could touch base.

Thanks,

Bill

Jim,

My buddy Richardo Yanez and myself own tract 59 in Myers Canyon Tract 8 in Paint Mare is right behind us. We bought our property last October so this was our first season out there. Richardo shot a very healthy 10 pointer and I shot a 14 pointer though it was missing a rear leg and was rather lean. We hunted mostly every weekend and also noticed that the deer being rather spooky as you mentioned. We did not notice too many hunters this season in Myers Canyon.

Did you see any nice bucks this year? As for us other than the ones we shot we saw a nice 12 pointer and a nic e mule buck and another whitetail buck at distance. Are there a lot of hunters in Paint Mare? Its seems most of the shooting was coming from that area. What has been your experience with the Game Wardens in Paint Mare. As for us they seem to drop by when ever they want asking if we have heard anybody shooting. Seems to be there standare questiong.

Thanks,

Doug Ewers

I've got tracks 19 & 25 in Paint Mare.

Bill,
I'm offshore, in the Gulf of Mexico, working and don't want to be posting my work number on a forum. Here is my e-mail address, jimcstreet@aol.com. Drop me a note w/ a contact number. I don't know if you've looked at Myers Canyon but it looks like some better tracks left on that ranch. You have to drive through MC to get back to Paint Mare. Drop me a line with a contact number.

Doug,
I saw the picture you posted of the 3 legged deer, what’s up with that? I've seen a lot but that was a first.
I hunted about 4 days at the first of November and saw 1 nice 10 point that never presented a good shot, I was bow hunting that morning. I wound up taking a doe with my bow that trip.
I made my second and final hunt the second week of December. I hunted 5 days that time and only saw a few young bucks, hopefully they made it through the season. The second hunt was very frustration for me as I had a bad chest cold and couldn’t set on a stand without coughing every 15 or 20 minutes. I didn’t shoot anything on this trip.
Most of the shooting you here is coming from down in the canyon south of me, some on Paint Mare but not all.
And yes I did meet the young Wardens in December. They drove right up to my camp on a Saturday after noon. It was only there second year out there and they seem okay. That was the first time I’ve been visited by a GW out there. I know there just trying to do there job the best they can and I respect that but really don’t like the idea of them diving up on my place like it was a public hunting area. People like us that have made large investment and put much effort into having a place of our own aren’t likely to be killing every think that walks on their property. On the same note their presents is good in detouring poachers and regulating the leased land in the area.
My e-mail address is in the note to Bill at top. Drop me a line sometime, maybe one of these days we’ll meet up out there.

I looked at couple of tracts in Paint Mare and it seems there are way to many feeders and hunters in one area. However I did see 8 does running around. The drive is way to far and I am going to look for something closer. Thank you for all your help. Good Luck.
