Greetings All,

I posted this on "Gun Talk", but then realized that it might be a better fit for the Hog Hunting forum.  Hope the duplicate post doesn't upset anyone.

I'm a new hog hunter, with only a couple of hunts so far, and brand new to this forum.  I've taken two shots and brought home two hogs with my .30-30 Marlin and 160 gr. Hornady LeveRevolution ammo.

I'm very interested, though, in taking some hogs with a handgun.  I've dusted off my ol' ('70's vintage) 8-inch barreled Dan Wesson .44 Magnum, and have been contemplating setting it up for hogs.  I've got a couple of questions for those of you who might have experience along these lines:

Anyone have any experience / recommendations for a scope?  I'm not sure what it would take to mount one on the DW, or what the best size, type, etc. would be.  I'd consider a red dot, but I'm more inclined to go with a conventional LER pistol scope.  I'm leaning real hard towards the Nikon 2.5-8 X 28 Encore EER, as I have a Nikon ProStaff on my .30-30 that I'm really happy with.

The DW .44 has been in and out of production over the years, and I'm not sure if it's in current production.  I have NO idea what might be available in the way of mounts, etc. for it, or if it will need to be drilled for a mount.

Any suggestions for ammo?  I'm pretty sure that 240 gr. JSP's would be the best pick, but I'm open to suggestions.

Hunting will be from a stand over a feeder, at a maximum of about 80-100 yards, most likely less.  My first hog was taken at about 70 yards, and the second at around 55, and I'll probably be hunting the same area.

Whaddaya think, guys?  Thanks in advance!

Regards,

Jim

I have a leupold 2.5 x 8 eer vari x on a 44 super blackhawk that works very well. I believe you are leaning the right direction.  Good luck and have fun.

Hello Kasey,

Thanks for the reply!  I was beginning to think nobody was going to respond...

I did find a scope mount online for the Dan Wesson, and it's on order.  Should be here on Tuesday.  I haven't settled for sure on the scope yet, but I think I'm likely to go with the Nikon.  I tend to be somewhat brand-loyal when I find something I really like.

What's the barrel length on your Super Blackhawk?  What sort of range have you been taking hogs from?  I would be pretty comfortable out to 100 yards or better with the DW, but wonder what your experience has been.  Also wondered if you use the 240 gr. JSP, or something else?  Thanks again for the info!

Regards,

Jim

Hello again,

I have a follow-up question to add to my original post:

I've just learned that the Hornady LeveRevolution ammo is available in .44 Mag.  Although it was developed for use in lever-action rifles with tubular magazines, a friend tells me it's also the ideal hunting round for a long-barreled handgun.

I've been really impressed with the performance of LeveRevolution .30-30 ammo in my rifle, so I'm very interested in hunting hogs with it in the .44 Mag.

Anyone have any experience with this ammo in a revolver?  TIA for replies!

Regards,

Jim

weird, thought I had replied to this

I use a 44 with an aimpoint micro

stick with hardcast for hogs, a HP or SP can kill them cleanly of course  but a hardcast will do it much more consistently and pucnh through both shoulders of even big hogs

you don't need a heavy recoilling round, a 250g hardcast ast 11-1200 FPS will cleanly do the job and is easy to shoot

this one I got last fall hunting with Bill Wilson of wWilson Combat

it's a performance center 6.5" with an Aimpoint Micro T1

at about 60 yards, clean through both shoulders (I am center and a little low)

ran about 30 yards and piled up
