I have always heard that hunting deer with a 300 mag is way too much gun for that particular species, now hunting large pigs 300 plus lbs is a different story.  If you need a good heavy caliber to hunt larger animals other then whitetail such as mule deer, elk, bear, moose, then I would say the 300 mag would be good.  I have used a Remington model 788 .243 cal for years and it has always been reliable.  Just recenly upgraded to the Winchester model 70 243 super short mag and completely satisfied with that!!!

I have a buddy that uses a 300 win mag on deer.  IMO way to much gun for deer.  He always blows the $#&% out of the shoulders and ruins a lot of meat.

I would use 180gr. bullets for closer ranges, like in the woods.the 150gr. bullets tend to tear adeer up to bad within a 100 yards.  try shooting both bullets at 100 yard targets  you'll be suprised how close they are in elevation. save your 150's for open country

I have a mid 80's Sako 300 Win Mag and found that with all bullets except Barnes X bullets and Nosler Partitions the terminal performance are explosive. I have hunted and taken game from 50 lb. european Roe deer to 400 lb. black bear with excellent results. I have a friend that swears by the 300 Ultra Mag in a Remington 700 with a good muzzle break. When I shot it, it felt like my 30-06 and I saw the results on the 450 lb, 7 foot black bear. A one shot kill that dropped it in it's tracks. Wear hearing protection. Reasons: You can always find parts and most gunsmiths can work on it. With my european rifles, that is not the case after 10 years. I have a Kimber chambered in the 300 WSM and while I reload 180 grain Nosler Partitions to 3000 fps, I would never go against large bear with it or any short mag rifles. Another friend had to shoot a moose three times before putting it down with his 325 WSM Browning rifle using a 225 grain Winchester bullets.

I use a Rem. 700 action with a Douglas 26" medium heavy barrel in a choat sniper stock. In my opinion the 300 win mag is a very stable platform for ranges out to 1000 yds. Medium distances of 300 to 500 yds are perfect for the 300. I have had great performance with the Hornady 165gr BTSP for mid-range targets. In my experience, the short mags are short on accuracy.
