Mule Deer Questions

I am looking for some help from anybody about mule deer.  My dad oversees a 24 section ranch trust in West Texas.  Within the last 4 years he has replaced most of the cross fences and some of the boundary fences, and has gotten the water wells going on all areas of the ranch.

We have had mule deer out there all along, and the herd is getting bigger every year with the improvements that have been made.  There is alot of oilfield on some parts of the ranch and the ranch is leased for cattle.

My question is how to attract and keep the deer on the ranch.  I was told years ago that mule deer would not come to a corn feeder, but I have seen mulies at feeders down around Iraan on a ranch that we arrowhead hunted.

Does anyone have any experience with attracting and keeping mule deer in an area with feeders - corn or other?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I was able to get in touch with a guy who runs 100 sections in Andrews and Winkler Counties, and he really helped me out.

Well don't just leave us here, what is the answer.  I have always heard that Mule Deer are nomadic but I have seen them hang around one area for quite a while.  So do they frequent a feeder??

He said that you can get them to come to a corn feeder, but it takes about a year to get them to come in and stay in the area with corn alone.  He uses 6 foot alfalfa bales to get them into an area as they can smell the hay from a good ways off.  He uses corn feeders after he gets the deer frequenting the hay, and then he just puts regular bales of alfalfa in the pens with the feeder and they will stay with the corn after that.

I have noticed that the white tails prefer the cracked corn over the whole kernel deer feed but the muleys move in and feed on the wild bird feed I put out for the quail on my place. Just dump out a pile and install a trail cam and see what works for you.
