Time for a new bullet???

I've been using the Nosler Ballistic Tip bullets in my deer guns for somethin like 9 years now. Great ballistics, and a tip that wont deform in the magazine under recoil like a lead tip will. However if I don't hit some kind of bone on the deer, I'm having identicle entry/exit wounds and tracking or walking up on wounded deer that I expect to be dead after an hour and a double lung shot rite behind the shoulder.

I just want a bullet that will transfer more of it's energy into a light skinned game such as deer. However, if I hit the shoulder instead of behind it, all hell breaks loose and the bullet typically tears the crap outa both front shoulder and part of the backstrap.

So what should I do? Stick with my tried a true bullets? Switch it up? Would picking a bullet that retains weight better (doesnt shatter into thousands of pieces on bone) and just taking the high-shoulder shot damage less of the meat?

BTW gun in question are .300wsm and 7mm rem mag Winchester model 70's.

I would go with the Nosler Partition.

You might try Hornady Interbonds.I've had good luck with them in the 139gr for the 7mags and 165gr in the 300mags.They group well in my rifles, will smash through both shoulders and exit on whitetails and I like them better than the Nosler Accubond.

I use 140 gr Nosler partitions in my 7mm and they do very well both in performance and groupings.  You also might try a Nosler Accubond, which is essentially a ballistic tip with a bonded lead core.

Funny you should say that about the ballistic tips not expanding...I used them for several years in a .308 and they expanded a little too quickly at in short range situations, whether they hit bone or not.

In the past I've got rapid expansion regardless or where the bullet impacted, it's just this season that got me second-guessing. I've used partitions in the past on heavier game and they performed well. I can't really switch ammo currently as I have 4 boxes of 150gr ballistic silver-tips left (I like to buy them in lots for consistency) and 4 boxes will last me many years unless I keep seeing these darn coyotes.

I see consistent 5/8''  five-shot groups with the 150gr ballistic silvertip factory ammo out of my model 70 ultimate shadow (on a lead slead) and I've never missed or lossed a deer with it, so I guess I can't really complain anymore.

I use Hornady SST 130GR .270 and get a good size exit wound with those.

Chris,

I do the same thing when buying ammo...its a great idea and if you know your gun shop owner pretty well it can be cheaper too.

This is a little off-topic, but since like you I do buy 'in volume', and am getting low on my current 7mm stock, I've been considering going to a lead free bullet, like a Barnes Triple shock.  Nosler and others are coming-up with their versions as well.  We switched in our .308s here a couple years a go and the Barnes do very, very well, though I haven't tried taking anything much past 100 yards yet.

The reasoning behind why I think the bulletmakers are doing this is some of the goofy things happing in California with leaded ammunition.  While its still a couple years off at least the 'left coast's' ideas are bound to result in federal legislation.

I and my Brother in law have shot the accubonds 140 gr in a .270 for the last 5 years or so.  I have been very happy with them, and have not had to track any animals very far...except a doe my sister gut shot this year.  Yes, if you hit bone you will end up with a lot of hamburger, but I'd rather have hamburger on the ground than a wounded deer running.

My Dad had an issue with the ballistic tip years ago.  Shot a doe, watched her fall, took a leak, then she was gone.  Never found blood, nor dead deer.

I can recommend the Barnes triple shock tipped. I reloaded these for an african trip last April in 30 Cal. 168 gr and after 10 animals we never lost one. I did shoot a zebra a bit back and had to track that for some 500 yards but had a good blood trail . I am checking out the Hornady tipped solids now hoping they will group a bit better.
