Okay this is pretty...crazy?  Strange?  Not the norm?  Check out these photos of Steve Bowen's Lewisville, Texas 26 point DOE.  Yes, that's what I said. Not only is that rack insane but this is apparently a doe.

I dont believe that one, if it really was a doe dontcha think heda shown that rear end and underneath in the picture. sure a doe could grow antlers but that there deer has a bucks face and shoulder on it.

the face does look odd and the neck is really skinny for a buck but the shoulders are pretty butchy, freak of nature

COYOTE

you said it mr. josh...i am unsure if its correct, but i read in one of the well known hunting magazines that antlered does tend to keep the velvet on the the antlers year round. either way that deer is a freak.

Looks like it could be a castrated buck.  Antler growth gets really gnarly like that when a deer is castrated.  However, a castrated deer generally won't rub off the velvet.

LIGHTNING

Well, I since this was such an crazy looking deer I tracked down Steve Bowen and asked him a bit about his deer.  Here is what he had to say....

"Chris, This deer was definitely a doe with utters and not any sort of stag buck. Although when I shot the doe at 40 yards during bow season I assumed it was a stag buck. In these pictures it's hard to tell but it has a doe face.

It was aged at 5 to 5.5 yrs. with a 17 in. neck. As the biologist explained it to me, the deer is a hermaphrodite with maybe pea size testicles on the inside. That's where the testosterone comes from to produce antlers. These antlers don't usually shed but will freeze off during the winter and re grow horns out of the bases. In which case this this deer had 10 in. bases.

I had seen this deer 2 yrs. ago and at that point it had a large palemate horn on one side. This deer is definitely a FREAK... - Steve, Bowen Landscape"

So there you have it!
