I am familiar with this area since I was born and raised in Odem TX and that area is full of huge Wild Hogs.  Great place to shoot a wild pig and I know there are plenty of them out there.  I need to scrape up $150 so I can check it out, should consider offering Hog and Fish combos, because I know that is a great location for catching some nice REDS also!!!

Well, we dont actually own the beach area!  That is owned by the Kenedy Foundation.  Several of the other land owners in this section let their people fish there but they arent supposed.  I have gotten permission personally, but dont think they would like me chargeing people to fish on their beach!  So, we dont do it for those types of legal reasons!

However, if you come out to do a pay hunt and are friendly with me then I just might be inclined to take you fishing out there sometime, but at no cost!

I have seen large schools of Reds feeding in the back lakes on the Nothern shores of Nueces bay and have had some great winter fishing days from Black drum back there also.  Not to mention the good duck hutning, my brother in law has caught nice speckeld trout also near the Whitepoint area.  I have seen huge wild pigs walking on the shores of Nueces Bay and there got's to be plenty of those rascals in the area.

Yes, the fishing can be very good back there at time, typically in the winter like you mentioned.  Our area of the shorline has all of the canals and finger flats.  Sometimes, large schools of redfish and drum get caught up in the tidal pools when the water goes out.  Its sick!! And can be very frustrating.  The are wallowing around in iches of water and you can clearly see huge redfish and drum but they are very hard to catch.

I like to throw lures, but even the tinest of lures will spook them.  A fly would be dedly but I dont flyfish.  I have found the best lure to be a tiny torpedo prop bait, the ones that are made for bluegill.  However, even this often spooks them.  Just about the only way to catch them is by tying a hook directly to your line with no weight, and baiting it with a peeled piece of shrimp.  Cast the bait in front of the fish but not right on top, they will usually pick it right up.  Its awesome even though its dead bait because the whole thing is visual cause the water is so shallow!

There can be so many that you want to just run out and grab them but the mud is way to soft and you will not get two steps before your up to your neck!

If you walk all the way out from our area you can eventually get to the open bay where there is a small island and several nice oyster reefs!  I used to fish this area alot growing up but not lately bcause I am so much into bass fishing!

Anyways, since you grew up in Odem, you have probably been out to my place.  When my greatgrandad died, and my dad moved to Dallas area; the ranch was left unattended to for about 20 yrs 70s-90.  People had knocked down the fences and gates and over the years locals forgot that anybody even owned it.  It was like public land for everybody.

When my dad moved us back to the area in 1990, it was over run by tresspassers!  Poacher/hunters, fisherman, trash dumpers, and drug cookers!  What fought for about 15 yrs to get it cleaned up.  It was very dangerous and took alot of blood, sweat, and tears.  We were dealing with people that had been tresspassing for so long that they actually believed they had every right to be there, and they would get very upset, even violent.  They would knock down our gates, signs and fences; destroy and vandalize our cars and property, and guns/shots were even fired on a few occassions (nobody ever hurt)!

Finally, we teamed up with an adjacent landowner that had a lot of money.  He gave us the funds to build big sturdy gates that could not be ripped down.  This solved the problem.  Within two years our animal population increased 10 fold!!  It took us 15 yrs of fighting but it has come full circle.  For the past 9 yrs things have been great and we get very few tresspassers and poachers.  We broke the local idea that the place was open to the public.

We got a good deer herd and tons of wild pigs!!  Come on out!

I have heard all the same stories about the "infamous back bay" area of Nueces Bay.  it is a shame that people behave the way they do and disrespect the land.  We actually have a relative that lives in one of the nice neighborhoods on the water near Whitepoint that has a private pier and have fished there, but the area called "La Rosita" was a favorite fishing spot for many eager individuals who did not have access to quality fishing spots and found incredible success fishing the whitepoint area when the roads were open.  There is another area closer to Odem that has access to the back bay where alot of people would dump trash back there and just make a mess.  But, plenty of fish have been caught and lots of stories about illegal hunting / poaching, property destruction, etc.  That is just not right for people to behave that way.  We had a buddy that use to check the gauges out there on the gas wells and he took us fishing back there on several occasions back in the late 80's and man was it always GOOD!!!

Yea, the area where the gauger took you fishing was probably my place.  I dont blame you for going, but the gauger actually had no right to be fishing there.  However, this was before we moved back to the area and there was no posted signs and everyone was going out there , so like I said, I am not blaming you of anything.  Growning up in that area, I would have put money that you had been out there weather you said so or not, everyone went out there!

Anyways, some of the gaugers posed the biggest problems for us out there after we came back.  Between them and the guys that leased 5 acres for a radio tower, it was a pain in the neck.  These guys had no right or business out there hunting and fishing, but had been doing it for so long that they felt that it was their right!  Just think what would happen if a rig hand shot a buck on a rig lease at the king ranch?  I garuntee that the whole company would loose their lease.  Those guys where only supposed to be out there for one reason, and it wasnt hunting!

However, no one was there to keep them in check for 20 yrs.  However, after we came back and started tell them they couldnt, they fought us over the issue.  We ran them out of there over and over but could never put charges on them because my grandma was the actual owner and she never followed up on it.  Finally, we got her to end her lease with the radio tower people, who were the worst of all.  On several occassions we caught them with bucks that they had killed out there.

We dont own mineral rights anymore so the gaugers are still out there, but to our knowledge they keep it profesional these days.

Like I said though, I am not trying to point a finger at you just giving a little history on the land!

Hey, forgot to post last night's results but here they are now!  The group took another hog last night, this time a 125 lb sow, perfect for eating!

They had a very good time and were very pleased with the ranch and the shooting opportunities.  There were 3 hunters, and 2 of them got hogs!  The third guy had a great time and saw several deer and other wildlife but unfortunately never had a pig step out at his feeder.  I felt bad but that is why they call it hunting and not killing!

THe group liked things so much that they have already shceduled another hunt!  They are going to give us pics of their hogs to post!

Good night!
