Diana and I left town at daylight yesterday headed for two and a half days in South Texas to hunt the Rio Grand Gobbler. We pulled into Dos HAches ranch about 1 p.m. -- Took a short nap and got into the field and got set up at 3:58 and made the first call.

The call was met with a gobble. Seven minutes later Diana had her gobbler on the ground. It was a 3 year old with a 9 1/2 inch beard and 19 lbs with one inch spur.

We took photos and drove the Jeep down and loaded up the bird and I went back and parked in behind some trees and walked back to our set up.

I sat down and began calling and suddenly a hen and 3 gobblers appeared down the road -- all 3 gobblers strutting. The hen led them away from my calls. They were only gone for 15 minutes and came back and I floorboarded the largest of the three. He had a 10 inch beard, one inch spur and 19 lbs. IT was now 5 p.m.

We had taken two gobblers in one hour and two minutes. It was the fastest hunt I have ever had.

So we loaded up this morning and came home. ha. WHAT A HUNT!

I will go back down on Friday to hunt with Shannon Topmkins of the Houston Chronicle, Susan Ebert, Freelance Outdoor Writer, and Ben Stanford--super caller and trumpet player. ha

Dos Haches ranch is a great place. Next Monday we will be in New mexico for a month.
