REALLY BIG TROPHY TROUT OF THE LOWER LAGUNA MADRE!

Stepping out of my usual "shallow water" boundaries, I spent the weekend down in Port Mansfield fishing the first Capt. Sally's Women's Fishing Retreat for 2009.  Wade fishing in February water that approached and spilled over the upper edges of chest waders was very productive for the women anglers who dared to approach the edge of their angling abilities.
 
The Getaway Adventures Lodge hosted our group which consisted of 8 hard-core and wanna-be hard-core anglers.  Cold water, overcast skies, a little rain and hard blowing winds did not deter the pursuit of trophy trout that only the Lower Laguna Madre can offer.
 
Because a few of these women love the topwater bite, that's where they started, throwing giant bone Super Spooks, big pink Skitterwalks and black/chartreuse She Dogs. 
 
Rewarded with some of the most heart stopping blowups and the biggest, fattest trout I've ever seen, these anglers marched for endless hours in very chilly conditions to catch 13 trout over 25" with many over 27", two in the 28" range and one over 29".  Most were caught on top, but a few on purple/chartreuse soft plastics and red/white Catch 2000's.
 
This first women's retreat was indeed a challenge on many levels, and these women lived up to the challenge and then some.  Learning about the special techniques and topography for targeting these gigantic trout was one of the highlights of the weekend.  The guides at the Getaway took each and every minute of our event very seriously and gave great advice along with their specialized knowledge.  Everyone came away from this event with great stories, pictures, memories and huge trout.  It's great when a plan comes together, and this event filled the bill!

Baffin Bay has a special "magic and mystery" that only a few people know in depth.  Our host for the second retreat of 2009 is just one of those people.  Capt. Aubrey Black knows more about the mystery of Baffin than anyone I know.  Rich in history and great stories, each shoreline, structure and rock pile has a background.  There's only one place in Texas that boasts the famous "rocks" that Baffin has, just ask anyone that has lost a lower unit there!
 
The real "Magic" of Baffin Bay can only be experienced on the water.  Because it's not very easy to access, the fishing there is reserved for only those that have the knowledge and skill to get to the sacred fishing that the bay offers.
 
More gigantic trout, lots of big redfish and a remote, special location will give anglers who attend the Baffin Bay Retreat a special experence most people will never have.
