CLEANUP AT GALVESTON BAY

 

GALVESTON (Houston Chronicle) – Texas has set aside $39 million to clean up Galveston Bay, which was littered with furniture, motorcycles, boats and other debris last fall during Hurricane Ike.

State officials say the cleanup is the largest of its kind in the state’s history, and they expect reimbursement from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Using sonar scans, the Texas General Land Office has pinpointed nearly 600 large pieces of underwater debris, and that’s after surveying only one-fifth of the bay.

The sonar scans will continue through February, but the cleanup could begin as soon as this week. The goal is to have the bay cleaned up before June 1, when the next hurricane season begins.
