We just spent 3days catfishing on the Rio Grande just down stream from the Black Gap WMA in West Texas and caught about 400lbs of channel and yellow cats using old deer and javelina liver on jug lines.  We also used live goldfish on some throw lines at night (this is what we caught the yellow cats on).

Danny Kings Catfish Punch Bait without a doubt!  The stuff is pretty stinky and nasty but let me tell you it's worth it!  You can find it at www.dannykings.com

My favorite is fresh cut shad. I will cut threadfins in halves and fillet the gizzard shad.

Patrick, where below Black Gap do you fish? We used to fish there, but the rules became so strict and the Mexicans stoled from our camp, that we quit going there. We used to catch some very nice fish there.

We were on a ranch at the base of Reagan Canyon and Big Canyon, about 5.5 miles down river from Black Gap.  We hauled everything down and back (including the boats) .  It was a 45 mile drive on some pretty rough dirt roads down through Reagan canyon and took 3 hours but it was in some beautiful country.  We averaged 10lbs on the channel cats and 20lbs on the yellow cats.

Mark, you are so right. Most people will tell you that bigger fish are not good to eat, bull. If you will trim off the fat and cut the fillets correctly, you cannot tell the difference between a 2# fish and a 50# fish. I know because I have caught both and eaten them. Its all in how you prepare the fish and how you cook them.

Very correct. I will shave the skinned side of the fillets to remove the whitish material then is left when the fish is skinned. This will remove any dirty/fishy flavor from the meat.

You are very correct Tim. I don't know why people do not do this. They just complain about the fishy tast of larger fish. I tell them to eather give them to me or turn them back and i'll go after them.
