From a personal email I got today:

"...check this footage out. This creature was video taped by an R.O.V. (remotely operated vehicle) in 7,800' of water. It is a Shell videotape. At the top of the screen it says 'Perdido' so I'm assuming it was filmed from that rig. Anyway, check out the size of this thing compared to the drill pipe next to it. It looks kind of like a squid of some sort, but a squid lacks a skeletal system. This thing looks like it actually has some type of skeletal structure because of the sharp bends on its tentacles....was taken during November 2007, while conducting subsea oilfield ops (operations) in the gulf of mexico." (emphasis mine)

FYI, The Shell 'Perdido' platform is located in Alaminos Canyon Block 857, about 200 miles south of Freeport, TX

Forgot to say that this is the deepest oil producing platform in the world (or at least it will be when they get it finished).

That's what I thought, except that it has what looks like a leg joint right below the body.  Squids (that I know of anyway) don't have that.

They do not have joints, but they do have cartilidge and musculature. I would imagine that posture is possible through muscle control of the tentacles. Probably to maximize surface area for food capture while drifting currents.

Keep yer eyes peeled!

Looks like some kind of squid but there is no telling what is really living out there in the ocean.

Either way you look at it that's one bizarre animal.

There's no tellin' what's under a boy's bed...we have 2 of them and I'm constantly amazed and the imagination needed to 'grow' some of the things we've found.

Apparently, the above video wasn't the full R.O.V. footage.  Here is a look at the uncut version that Shell obviously didn't want people to see.
