ISLAMORADA, In-the-Florida-Keys, U.S.A.  –   Local Keys angler John Timura is atop the leaderboard among 32 world class fly and light tackle champions, after releasing three snook and three redfish for 600 points after the first day of the IGFA Inshore World Championship.
Dubbed the “super bowl of inshore fishing,” the International Game Fish Association’s celebrated catch-and-release format features the anglers stalking the surrounding Florida Bay waters for bonefish, tarpon, permit, snook and redfish.

The three-day eighth annual IGFA IWC runs through Wednesday, July 2.

Timura, Islamorada, caught all six of his fish on either artificial shrimp or jerk baits. He was guided by Capt. Mike Hutchinson, Miami Springs, Fla. who he credited with spotting the redfish during the hot, humid and sometimes overcast day.

Qualifying for the championship by winning the Mercury Baybone Celebrity Tournament last year in Key Largo, Timura has his sights set high.

“My goal is to score three slams (three fish of all five species) and I’m two-fifth of the way there,” he chuckled. “I have 18 hours to score three permit, three tarpon and three bonefish.”

In second place with 500 points is Art Bokor, Robbinsville, N.J. who like Timura fished the Flamingo area below the Everglades, releasing three snook and two redfish. He was guided by Capt. David Denkert, Tavernier, Fla.

In third is Mark Cooper, Aurora, Colo., with 450 points with three snook on fly.  The former NFL lineman for the Denver Broncos and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers said he plans to fish the fly division throughout the event. He was guided by Capt. Larry Syndor, Key Largo, Fla.

In fourth place is Troy Pruitt, Naples, Fla., with 350 points releasing two permit on bait using circle hooks.  He was guided by Capt. Eric Herstedt, Homestead, Fla.

The anglers gained entry winning one of over 55 fly and light tackle IGFA tournaments during 2007 held in eight countries around the world representing nearly 3,000 anglers on four continents, vying to be in the “tournament of champions.”  Of the champions, 15 are first time invitees including anglers from Sweden, Uganda, Africa and Darwin, Australia.

Defending champion Robert Collins, of Naples, and Islamorada, Fla., is tied with several anglers at 300 points after catching two redfish and a 39” snook each on artificial baits. Collins, who was guided by Capt.Ken Knudsen, Islamorada, also won the tournament in 2005.  In May Collins and Timura were members of a five-man team winning the IGFA Offshore World Championship in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, out fishing 63 teams from 27 countries.

Also with 300 points is Phil Clark of Darwin Australia scoring his points on three redfish, guided by Capt. Dale Perez, Tavernier. He qualified after winning the Northern Territory Barramundi Classic.

The anglers participated in a captain’s draw matching a different guide and angler for each of the three days. Mike Myatt, the event’s tournament director said, “To a degree the rotating guide and angler format relieves the ‘home field’ advantage and lends itself to maximizing not only the angler’s strengths, but also the guide’s.”

The contestants are vying for timepieces in the prestige tournament. The four major award categories include: Grand Champion (the angler who accumulates the most points for all five targeted species); and first places in the fly, artificial lure and bait casting divisions. Trophies and merchandise for second and third place divisional winners as well as to the top three guides. The point value of the fish is determined by species and the angler’s fishing preference.

The Islander Resort is the tournament headquarters, while fishing and daily scorekeeping takes place from the World Wide Sportsman marina. Both are located near mile marker 82.

The daily results of the IGFA IWC along with photos of the previous day’s round is being posted each morning on the IGFA’s home page at igfa.org.

Former champ leads field with 5-fish slam after

Day 2 of the IGFA Inshore World Championship

Needs two fish for second slam in prestigious tournament of champions

ISLAMORADA, In-the-Florida-Keys, U.S.A.    Joe “Pepe” Lopez, Coral Gables, Fla. the 2006 winner of the IGFA Inshore World Championship, became the leading angler after two days by catching and releasing all five tournament species to complete his first slam towards again reigning in the grand champion title.

The International Game Fish Association’s celebrated catch-and-release tournament, nicknamed the “super bowl of inshore fishing,” features 32 anglers from around the world stalking Florida Bay waters for bonefish, tarpon, permit, snook and redfish.

The three-day eighth annual IGFA IWC concludes on Wednesday, July 2.

Adding to his Day 1 total of two redfish and a snook both on bait, Lopez on Tuesday, guided by Capt. Bruce Stagg, Islamorda, caught and released one permit, two tarpon and three bonefish, all on bait to round out his scoreboard leading slam. “He needs a permit and a snook to complete his second slam,” said IGFA IWC tournament director Mike Myatt.

That’s what defending champion Robert Collins, of Naples, and Islamorada, Fla., is hoping for as well.  Collins, who Monday had a 300 point day on two species (two redfish and a snook) had a better day Tuesday catching-and-releasing two tarpon on artificial, one permit on crab and three redfish all on bait. He’s the only other angler with four species for a 925 point total.

“I’m hoping to get doubles on Wednesday of the remaining species we need to pull together two slams,” said Collins, who was guided by Capt. Steve Friedman, Islamorada. Collins also won the this tournament in 2005 added, “I think with this deep field of competitors it will take at least two slams, maybe three to win the grand champion title.”

Also in contention is Greg Zaepfel, Williamsville, New York, who was “on fire”  with Tavernier guide Capt..Steve Thomas, releasing three permit, three snook and three redfish on a variety of baits and artificial lures.  Zaepfel, who won the Redbone @ Large Greater Niagara Bass-eye Celebrity Challenge in Buffalo last year to qualify said ”they were in the right places at the right times.”

“Yesterday I was looking for permit but never found them, but today we were looking for redfish and snook, but also found the permit.”  Zaepfel who didn’t catch a fish Monday now has 975 points on the triple catches of the three species.

Mark Cooper, Aurora, Colo., widened his lead to three species in the fly division catching a redfish and a tarpon to add to his three snook on fly Monday.  The former NFL lineman for the Denver Broncos and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers was guided Tuesday by Capt. Eric Herstedt, Homestead, Fla.

After releasing three snook and three redfish for 600 points Monday, first day leader John Timura, Islamorda stumbled in his goal of two slams, catching a single permit Tuesday.

The 32 anglers gained entry winning one of over 55 fly and light tackle IGFA tournaments during 2007 held in eight countries around the world representing nearly 3,000 anglers on four continents, vying to be in the “tournament of champions.”  Of the champions, 15 are first time invitees including anglers from Sweden, Uganda, Africa and Darwin, Australia.

Collins wins third IGFA Inshore World Championship -  Catches 13 fish among 5 species in prestigious tournament of champions

ISLAMORADA, In-the-Florida-Keys, U.S.A.  – Fresh from a team win in the IGFA Offshore World Championship in Mexico, Robert Collins won the IGFA Inshore World Championship while defending his Grand Champion title accumulating the most points for five targeted species.

It was his third championship title in the eight years of the inshore tournament.

“Two world championships within two months, I’m speechless,” smiled Collins. “Today was a real nail biter right up to the end, just like in Cabo San Lucas.”

The International Game Fish Association’s celebrated catch-and-release tournament is dubbed the “super bowl of inshore fishing,” as 32 anglers from around the world stalked the Florida Bay waters for bonefish, tarpon, permit, snook and redfish.

Collins who has homes in Islamorada and Naples, was chasing Day 2 leader Joe “Pepe” Lopez, Coral Gables, Fla. in the final round hoping to catch two bonefish, a snook and a permit to complete two slams of fish to go with earlier catches of nine fish.

Lopez, who won the title in 2006, had completed one slam on Tuesday and needed just two fish -- a snook and a permit -- to collect his second slam in the three-day event.  He fell short by catching only a snook early, but like all the anglers suffered with overcast skies searching for the permit.

“I was hoping to get the remaining species we need to pull together two slams,” said Collins, who was guided by Capt. Mark Gilman, Islamorada. Collins who first won the tournament in 2005 caught a snook early and then two bonefish and a redfish but was also a permit shy of his second slam. He scored 1250 points on his 13 fish using both bait and artificial along with circle hooks for added points

Lopez won both runner-up grand champion and the bait division title with his slam and four fish for 950 total points.

In the fly division Mark Cooper, Aurora, Colo., won on releases of a redfish, a tarpon and three snook. The former NFL lineman for the Denver Broncos and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers totaled 775 points while going scoreless the final day.

First day leader John Timura, Islamorada, bounced back in the final round to win the artificial division on catches of redfish, snook and permit over the three days. In May Collins and Timura were members of a five-man team winning the IGFA Offshore World Championship in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, out fishing 63 teams from 27 countries.

Capt. Mike Hutchinson, Miami Springs, Fla. was named the top captain by scoring the most points in guiding Timura,  Rich Gorden, Brooksville, Fla. and Johann Pettersson of Ornskoldsvik, Sweden in their rounds over the three days.

IN OTHER TOURNAMENT NOTES
Three anglers from the continents of Europe, Africa and Australia made good showing as first time invitees to the world-class tournament, and all said they hope to compete again next year subject to qualifying wins in their regions.

Johann Pettersson of Ornskoldsvik, Sweden, who went scoreless the first two days rallied big with 625 total points on releases of redfish and snook using artificial and fly. He had won the Pike Challenge in his home country to advance to IWC. Close behind was Phillip Clark of Darwin, NT, Australia with 600 points on catches of redfish. Clark advanced after winning the NT Barramundi Classic “down under.”

Gustaf Brew, Ekvik, Sweden the winner of the Murchison Falls tournament in Uganda, Africa had 100 points despite having just going through knee surgery. Linda Denkert, Tavernier, Fla., gave anglers in the fly division a run on Wednesday by releasing three bonefish for 600 points to add to her earlier round redfish to finish second in the division with 725 points, 50 points behind Cooper.

“We went zero for eight in chances to catch a tarpon,” she said.

Her Day 3 guide was Capt Kenny Knudsen, Islamorada. Cal Collier, Jr., Atlanta, Ga., was third in fly. Making a late charge was Troy Pruitt, Naples, Fla., who ended the tournament with 1025 points scoring a slam while taking second in the bait division.

Pruitt, guided Wednesday by Capt. Rusty Albury, Islamorada, released a bonefish, a snook and two redfish adding to his previous duo releases of tarpon and permit. Greg Zaepfel, Williamsville, New York, a suburb of Buffalo, who was “on fire” and in contention with 975 points on Tuesday with triples of snook, redfish and permit, failed to score anything on the final day as well as the opening round. He took third in the bait division. Finishing behind Timura in the artificial division were Stephanie Parsons, Naples, Fla., with 900 points for second and Rich Gorden, Brooksville, Fla. in third with 750 points. Fishing and daily scorekeeping took place from the World Wide Sportsman marina.
