The TexasHuntFish.com Staff met to discuss the Reward Points System and propose changes for 2008.

We started this contest as a fun way to encourage everyone to create a stronger community of hunters and anglers who are willing to share their knowledge and help each other. As we reviewed the “Top 100” Members, we realized that some of the current point values do not fairly reflect our focus on quality hunting and fishing content. It's easy to go through and make one-word comments or to click a star to rate an image, but it is so much more valuable to be a member who contributes and initiates good content on the site.

We will continue to recognize the “Most Points Winner” each month, and give that person a $100 gift card. (Please note: A member cannot win the Top Points Winner Gift Card 2 months in a row.) Rather than give monthly gift cards to only three people each month, we thought it would be a great idea to organize a series of group trips this year. We would love to meet many of you in person, as well as recognize our most active members by providing them a significant discount (hopefully free) hunting and fishing trip.

Occasionally, we see a video or photo, or we read a journal or forum post, that is hard to describe other than to use the word “awesome” in its proper context. We want everyone to ask questions and share knowledge, but we have struggled with a way to recognize a member who really invested their time and energy to answer someone’s question or share some knowledge in a way that is powerful, effective, and timeless. Therefore, starting now, we will give “Bonus Points” by choosing our “Favorite” in the categories listed below. We may choose to reward more than one item in each category in the same month, or we may choose to not reward anyone. This is purely based on the quality of the content.

BONUS:         OUR FAVORITE
300                  Forum Post
300                  Video
200                  Photo
200                  Journal Entry

On a final note, we have simplified the list of actions and changed the points to reflect a combination of value to the community and effort required by our members:

POINTS         YOUR ACTION
300                  Member Referral. Use the “Email this page” to invite a friend to the website.
200                  Add a Guide or Lease Listing
100                  Upload Your Own Video
50                    Write a Journal Entry
25                    Upload a Photograph. Whether uploaded to the Gallery, Forum, Journal, etc.
25                    Add a Yellow Page Listing
25                    Add a Calendar Event
1                      Start a Forum Thread
1                      Rate Anything
1                      Comment or Reply Anywhere
1                      Email This Page

This new system was put into effect in the last days which is why you might see different point totals than before.

Over the next week we will monitor the new point system, fix bugs, update other related files, and look forward to hearing your comments, questions and complaints. :-)

It may be easy to click a star,, but I don't have the time to make a  great reply/statement to every picture I look at, or every forum post I read. I DO like to at least acknowledge that I saw what the posting member was proud enough of to post. I have also learned a LOT just from looking at pictures and reading the responses to them, as I am not originally from Texas. I moved here in 1998, and feel I will never learn enough about this state I now call home, and have grown to love. I do not mean to go off on anyone by any means, I completely understand what you are saying Debra, I just want you all there to know what this site means to me, at least a little. I like to think I am making new friends here, albeit slowly. Please, keep up the great work!

mrbigtexan,

Member referral - 300 points - is given when you "Email this Page to a Friend" and that person ends up registering on the site.

The system documents what email addresses you use to "Email this Page to a Friend" and if any of those emails are used to register and become a member, you will be given the points for the referral.

kesoliver's comment above is a good example of how someone uses our website for their enjoyment and community sharing.

Meanwhile, there are other people who do make great contributions of content that takes many hours to prepare, and although not as frequent, we want to recognize those people for their effort to share with our community.

With me at a hospital in California visiting my brother, who's wife has very premature twins yesterday - and thank god everyone seems healthy and stable - and Diana being out of the office with a nerve pinched in her neck - we haven't had a chance in the last 48 hours to verify all the numbers and assign points to past favorites. Hopefully we will get caught back up by Monday.

The bottom line is we want to indentify the most active members of our community and start to use our funds to organize some group gatherings and fun. Hopefully, everyone will be patient as we make this transition and likes the idea of having some fun together.

The Real Estate Rancher, the stars underneath the avatars represent the number of posts you have made in the forum.

The formula is Number of Posts / 100. (Up to 10 stars)

100 posts=1 star, 500 posts=5 stars, 1000 posts=10 stars, 10,000 posts=10 stars. Anything over 1000 posts will show 10 stars.

I really wish you had waited until a new month to start the change in the points, it really bolloxed things up by starting in the middle of a month. There are other things I'd like to say, but I won't.  Mom raised me better.

Thanks all.
