I know alot of people will disagree with me on this but I feel the .25-06 is a near useless round. Unless your only hunting prarie dogs. I know it can be used for other things but the .270 is a more useful round. Are these your only two choices? I would go whit either a .243 or a 6mm.

25-06, 270 or 280 are all great calibers and very versatile, these were all candidates when I purchased my last rifle. I personally chose the 280 because I love the 7mm caliber and the large number of bullet weights that are availiable 115 gr up to 200 gr. The 270 is a great caliber and the manufacturers have started to put out more choices for bullet weight in the past couple of years. As for the 25-06, I love the caliber and almost bought one when I purchased my 280. I have seen a 25-06 take out deer at 250yds+ and cottontails at 200yds in the right hands. The 25-05 also has heavier available bullet weights up to 120gr and the 243 only 105 gr. No offense Wheeless621 but I think the 25-05 is much more versatile than the 243 or the 6mm. Don't get me wrong, every caliber I have mentioned will do the job on any native game here in Texas. But to put me on the spot for all around out of the two you posted, I would go with the 270. You will never be dissatisfied with the 270. If you wanted to you could even take Elk with the 270 but the 25-06 would be way undergunned. Good luck and let us know what you pick.

I agree with Gman,THE 25-06 can be used to take allmost any game in Texas. It is a little light for larger game. But I have a friend back home that hunts whitetail with the 25-06 and I have personally seen him take whitetail deer at 350+ yrds with it. Understand that he is an exceptional shot and shoots from a rest. Which gun is best, depends on what you will be hunting. All around the 270 is a dandy weapon. I have one and have taken everything from whitetail to elk. Choose the one that you fell is right for you, as any weapon will only shoot as well as the person shooting it.

my 2 cents worth I have used my 25-06 to take several deer I use it when hunting open areas and long distances. when i am hunting brush or larger animals I use my 30-06 but in the end it is more important that YOU are comfortable with the caliber and gun you are hunting with.
Good luck and happy hunting!

No offense taken gman, I never take offense to dissagreements on subjects such as this. Everyone has their different opinions. As it has been said many times befroe on this thread and many others on this site, it all boils down to whats right for each inividual hunter/shooter.

I had a .25-06 for over 20 years and took a lot of whitetail with it - great round for up to mulies (WT, mule deer, antelope, and varmints). Would not hunt with less than a 117 gr bullet though for WT...because of an incident that happened to me a number of years ago with a 100 gr. The bullet split in half as it hit the shoulder and made one whale of a mess in the body cavity. When my eldest son got old enough to hunt I wanted to get him a gun in a versatile round that wouldn't kick his shoulder off. Did a little research on recoil and found that a .308 kicked just a little more than a .25-06 and it has the versatility to go up to elk (although I wouldn't recommend it at long range). He had shot the .25-06 so going up to a .308 was no problem for him - he's taken 4 deer in the last 2 years and loves the gun. As far as the .270 goes I'm not really that a big fan of it. Its a good round, but in my opinion either a 7mm Rem Mag or .30-06 would do better (not trying to stir the pot because its obvious everyone here doesn't share that opinion). A 7mm Rem Mag will do anything a .270 will do and more. Yeah it has a little more recoil, but with it you can zing a 140 gr at significantly flatter trajectory than a .270 for WT, but you can also go up to 160 gr for elk (175 gr if you reload) with reasonably good ballistics. If you want to use a bullet weight greater than that I'd go with a .30-06.

I am a fan of buying the one you like most now, and then leave the door open for another gun in the near future, and then another after that, and another after that. My philosophy is that if I didn't need one of each, they wouldn't make them. A 30-06 is pretty durn versatile and it kind of screws up the previous philosophy.

oops hit the reply button on accident. Anyway I'm with Kevin. All calibres have a purpose, or a good use. that's why I am attempting to own one of each. Its just going to take a while.

Don't mention it. Just don't tell your wife it was my idea. I am already in hiding. And, remember, wives don't do simple logic. They are emotional. Tell her how unfair it is to the animal and she'll come around. Next, you need a bow too - there's a perfectly good bow season that preceeds gun season. Don't forget about that one! Extra time in the woods!

My 2 cents. Before you buy your rifle, compare the ballistics fo a 308,270,270wsm.& the 25-06.You will be very surprised.I bought abrowning 270wsm. because it is very fast and also has great knock down power.I shot 2 bucks with the 270wsm and I was amazed how hard it hit those 2 bucks.

Adolfo and I are on the same page. When you compare the ballistics the 270 really looks good. The other consideration of course is can you buy bullets at the local walmart if you have to while on a trip - which is why I don't have a .257 Weatherby

I've heard that a 270 WSM is a pretty good round but I've also heard it has some feeding problems due to the brass diameter (never shot one myself). But, all this boils down to preference...if you're looking at a combination of ballistics and downrange energy a 7mm Rem Mag is just as flat-shooting, has a better commercially-available bullet weight selection, and you CAN buy them at a local Wal-Mart.
