I was not aware that the Grapevine Lake Army Corps of Engineer land allowed hunting. In fact I thought I've even seen a sign at the entrance that says No hunting. Maybe there is a different unit that I don't know about though...nice buck. I think I've seen him in the area.

lake lewisville is the one that you cannot hunt deer at but can hunt hogs. when you go get the corp permit at grapevine it also includes lewisville hunting land, but you can deer hunt grapevine, the guy in the picture about also posted a week earlier that he shot a bigger buck through the back at grapevine and never did find it. some other guys have said they always see his truck out there, so he hunts alot.

ANTLERS

I drive by that area every day and see that truck there frequently. Denton County has the antler restrictions and that sure doesn't look like a 13 inch spread to me...

If you notice the post date that deer was taken two seasons ago befor the antler restriction were enforced there.

I did not bother to look at that... It is a good buck for public land. Just an example of why the antler restrictions are a bad idea.

I'll agree with you on the first part, on the second comment not so much. The jump in antler size a buck makes from 3.5 years old to 5.5 years old can be quite amazing, we just have to let them grow... that grapevine buck was not that old.

I wonder if in a few years though we might be saying for a deer posted with a rack like that just at 13 inches: "It is not a good buck for public land".

I am on the fence. But I am curious to see what the result is of this giant experiment the State is putting us through.

Food for thought--some biologist worry that with the 13 in restrictions, in a few yrs you will have only a lot of inferior bucks as you cannot cull the ones that need to go. I'm still on the fence on this one.
