Hunting in Peru?
Click image for print quality version A memorandum of agreement was signed between the National Wild Turkey Federation and the Peruvian Hunter's Association (PHA) on Feb. 23 during the NWTF's 31st annual Convention and Sport Show in Nashville, Tenn.

Dr. James Earl Kennamer, NWTF senior vice president of conservation programs, signed the Wild Turkey Partnership Agreement with Thomas Saldias, U.S. Representative for the PHA. The agreement formalizes the NWTF's endorsement of the PHA's activities in Peru to promote legal hunting, scientific management of wildlife populations, improve wildlife habitat and promote conservation education and ethics throughout the country.

"Peru, unlike the U.S., doesn't have comparable state or federal wildlife agencies, so legal hunting and wildlife management is nonexistent," said Kennamer. "We hope the NWTF's support will help the Peru government move ahead to legalize hunting and develop scientific based wildlife management."

The NWTF's role will primarily be to provide technical advice and endorsement regarding hunting and wildlife management in Peru. The PHA wants to establish wildlife management areas, offer hunting opportunities for national and international sportsmen and promote other outdoor tourism activities within the country. In addition they would like to formalize a framework to establish youth and adult conservation education programs.

"The Peruvian Hunters Association knocked at the doors of several pro-hunting organizations in the United States and it was National Wild Turkey Federation who opened its doors," said Saldias. "We would like to thank the National Wild Turkey Federation for honoring us with this cooperative agreement."
