750 Tons of Venison Feeds Six Million Servings

During the last four years FHFH and its affiliate and partnered states were responsible for the processing of 750 TONS (6,000,000 servings) of high protein venison for churches and soup kitchens throughout the Mid-Atlantic region. “That’s enough meat to feed our nation’s capitol for nearly two weeks,” stated C.J. Winand, FHFH National Promotions Director.

“ We can do more,” states David Horne, Director of Virginia Hunters for the Hungry. Raising the funds to cover the processing cost is the limiting factor.”

During the early nineties a number of venison feeding programs were begun to help solve two problems: hunger and an overpopulation of white-tailed deer in many areas. Most of these programs encouraged hunters and farmers to donate a portion of their harvested deer and to pay for the processing of the deer. While this concept was a step in the right direction, these programs have either fallen short of their goals or given up due to their lack of funding. As FHFH began to grow, Wilson remembers asking, “God, how are we going to pay for all these deer?” His pastor, Rev. Ray Shriver, said, “With God all things are possible.” To this end interest and support from both the hunting community and the non-hunting public have enveloped FHFH since it’s beginning in September 1997 and continue to fuel its expansion today.
