hey guys. i have just picked up hog hunting. i tried a few baits from HEB. (hog wild, pig out, corn) but they didn't work. i have been hearing about recipes you make from home that drives the hogs crazy. does anyone have any help on what to use as bait?

if it is something you can buy, will you please list where to buy it, and how much it cost?

i just need to know what works the best.

please pm me if you have a "family recipe" that you don't want everyone to find out about.

Hey Joe.  Don't have any recipes for ya but would love to hear your take on the baits you bought, how you used them and why you think they failed.  Save us the pain of purchasing a waste of money!

with the hog wild, i mixed it with the corn like it said in the directions. then put it in the feeder. it was a really dusty kind of additive. when i tested the feeder, it seemed like all of the powder just blew away in the wind. there was very little on the ground. the reason i didn't like it was simply cause it didn't bring in any hogs. just deer under the feeder.

the pig out was pretty much the same thing with a different label on the bag.

like i said, i'm new to this so if i'm doing something wrong please let me know.

My experience is those products - and I have used both - really are made to work when you know you have hogs in the immediate area. Their purpose is to congregate the hogs and give them more time under the feeder. If you don't have obvious hog tracks in the immediate area, then you most likely will not have successful hunt by putting it out there and getting in your blind.

However, if you have seen hog markings in the area, then what you want to do is exactly what you did, but give it a couple of days to work. Putting it out on a Friday evening has led to success on Saturday evening and Sunday morning for me in the past.

I have tried jello, fermenting corn in the heat by pouring it into a tub with water and add a little milk to turn it sour faster, big red, and diesel, in terms of the homemade recipes. Again, those hogs are smart. Many times I have had ZERO hogs come in; then I have had a band of 20 come running in. Setting up a wildlife camera to watch your bait all night is very helpful.

When it comes to hogs and big bucks, the wind and your scent is so critical. If this wind is blowing your scent towards where you think the hogs are bedded down during the day, then you have to get in a crosswind position and elevation helps if you have a stand. My best success has been when the wind barely blew during the day, hopefully in their direction, and then I have been fortunate to have the wind change and blow a steady 5mph in my face (away from them). That is the perfect ambush.

Tell us about the different things you try, what part of Texas you are in, are you using a bow, rifle, shotgun, pistol, or other method? It is great to share what doesn't work as much as what does work because it saves us all time and money as Chris said above.

This old forum post has several very effective "baits" for various species. The hogs took this one and ran the first night. There is a photo as the end of the post about the Cherry flavored Hog Scent. CLICK HERE TO READ

This has worked well for me in the past.  Fill a 5 gallon bucket with chicken mash, top off with two packages of yeast, dump a six pack of the cheapest beer you can find.  Cover and set in the sun for a few days.  Can be dumped on the ground but I have good luck burying it shallow hole with just a little exposed.  Good Luck in your search.

thanks for the help guys. here is a little more info about where and when i'm hunting.

i am hunting right outside of Hondo. i hunt on 180 acres. i night stock hunt using a mini 14 w/night vision, or an ak-47. so far i have only killed 1 russian boar out there. (about 300lbs) it is 3 huge milo fields seperated by thick woods. there is only 1 feeder, and 1 tri pod out there. i bait the middle of each field. i figured that would cover more area with the scent/wind.

i never really see too many signs of hogs. but there are a few rooting patches.

does that help kind of visualize what i might need to do, or what i'm doing wrong?

The easiest thing i know of doing is to mix corn, water, milk, jello mix,and chiken liver. Try putting bait you use in a hog trail ang lead it to your hunting spot with corn. Also try building a trap super easy only cost about $20 go to

Mix diesel and corn together and let it sit for 3 or 4 days.  1.  It really attracts hogs 2.  Coons and deer will leave it alone.  If you have a tree near your feeder you can wrap a old piece of carpet around it and spray it with diesel and hogs will use it for a rub.

good luck

i think i found something that will help you with your problem. this guy did different studies to find out what worked the best in different locations, free ranch and high fenced hogs.

It is clearly my experience, through studies, that hogs FIND BAIT because they stumble onto it BY CHANCE. NOT because they smell it. That's why I have so many times claimed, that the location chosen for baiting hogs is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT because hogs are not attracted by smell. They must locate the bait by chance!!! Even when lures and baits were placed just a few yards from a trail hogs WOULD NOT FIND IT!! I would have to put the bait directly on the trail before the hogs would find it!! These facts are very important and need to be remembered when setting up a feeder or bait station.
Now, for a more important fact on how hogs locate baits. Usually raccoons are the first to find baited areas. That's why corn is so important. If you notice, most all those high dollar "WILD" luring products suggest you mix them with corn,,, well,,, DUHHHH. That's because corn works! Here's how it works, the raccoons find the bait, because they are better at it! They make trails to the baited area. THEN the hogs follow the trails the raccoons make!

YOUR CORRECT TEX HUNTR87 THEY DO FOLLOW THE COON TRAILS AND I FOUND THAT IT HELPS TO COVER YOUR SENT WITH COON URINE WHEN SETTING OR BAITING YOUR TRAP DONT PLACE IT ON THE BAIT ITSELF JUST ON THE TRAIL AND AROUND THE TRAP

I've used Hog Wild and Pig Out with great success, however, unless hogs frequent the area you place your bait, they will never touch it. What i do when i use any hog attractant is dig 3 holes with a post-hole digger about 3-4 deep in a triangle pattern...layer the corn and attractant in each hole...this will require the hogs to root up the area in order to get the food. I've actually stalked within 10 yards of a 315lb boar that had his head down in the hole eating the bait and was able to stick him with a broadhead.

If you're hunting in Milo, find where they come in and out of the field and set up there.

Jello with corn is good.  My buddy traps hogs and uses wheat screenings as well as sow in heat urine that he sells.  It's crazy...I've seen him catch 20 hogs at once in one trap.

I have tried the hogwild also, i mixed it in my feeded and hunted it 3 days in a row, nothing. came back 3 days later, the ground was dimolished! I have the problem where i have hogs on my land, noone hunts it but me, I have seen big groups of hoggs, go back to where i have seen them, bait that area, and wait. WITH NO LUCK!!!!! Everytime i see them, they move when i go back to hunt. They never come through the same time, or same place. i have spun 3 bags of corn, and only birds eat it. My count for this year, 0 hogs, 0 deer, 0 coons, nothing but ducks. so your better of than some of us. lol. good luck. ps., i heard that red kool-aid mixed with corn works. i have soured boons farm with corn and took it to my ranch and my rubbermaid tote was ripped to pieces... i know a bottle of boones is only 2 bucks at walmart.

Those jugs of expensive syrup attract more hunters than hogs.  I have done the trick of digging a hole, putting in a layer of corn, then old beer, molasses, anything really, another layer of corn, etc.  It does cause them to work for it.  This also works for deer if you want to try out a temporary spot without putting in a feeder right away.

If there are any cattle on the property, we have spread Sow Mix rather than corn.  It is much finer than corn and the cows can't really pick it.  The cows still come mind you, but they can't eat much of it leaving it for the piggies.  Nothing more frustrating than spreading a bunch of corn around and having the damn cows eat it all!

I read about using a "hog pipe" and my dad uses one on his lease and the hogs tear it up.  Just take a nice piece of pvc pipe drill some holes in put your favorite hog recipe (corn mixed with whatever) cap both ends and stake it to the ground so the hogs must work the hog pipe in a circular pattern.  You know you got hogs hitting it when you find barren ground in a circular pattern one or two feet deep.  The hog pipe makes the hogs work for their meal and keeps them in the area longer.

I know you aren't crazy about the hog wild but it has certainly worked for me.  Depends on how you use it. A friend had me try the following.  Take a post hole digger and go down 3 feet deep.  Put about 2 inches of corn in the bottom.   Add some Hog Wild (the granules).  Add about 6" of corn and some more HW.  About one foot of corn and some HW.  Keep this up to about the last foot.  Then mix the HW liquid, corn, and HW granules to about 6 inches from the top.  Cover with dirt.  Sprinkle some corn around a 10 foot area and a little of the HW liquid.  It will have to sit at least a day or two.  They will keep on rooting until they get down the whole 3 feet. That doesn't happen in one sitting.   Then you just have to be there when they come.

Pigs like corn.  Put corn out, save your money on the rest.  If you want to add anything, save up a day or two of table scraps and throw it in.  They'll eat anything.  It's not like they're picky eaters or sunthin...

I agree wi roadkill. I have used hog wild, sour corn and corn out of the bag. One works as well as the other for me, so I go the easy route and use corn out of the bag. I live in east Tx and the hogs here travel. Set your trap around where you see fresh hog sign. I have rarely caught hogs the first night after setting the trap. They are wary of your scent so try and leave as little as possible. In the past 2 yrs, i have caught or shot A LOT of hogs on less than 100 acres and my pastures today, have rooted up areas all over them. I have trapped 7 during this month and 5 last month.

It might just be me but the idea of using Diesel fuel as an attractant is crazy. Something like that has no business in the field. I eat my hogs and in these times it is a great way to make use of the kill. I eat everthing I shoot. I do not want Diesel fuel in, on or around my food.

Too many people just shooting them to shoot them. I know they are a nuisance but there are plenty of hungry people who could use them, but when contaminated with Diesel. There ARE plenty of effective attractants that work without harming the enviriment or your family.

For those who like the taste, I heard of a tasty Antifreeze Marinade you might like.

Hey guys, I just noticed this thread isn't all that old (As far as the latest post) and I figured I would stop by and give y'all my two cents.

In my experience the only thing that has worked for me (South texas) is diesel and corn. Mix it and let it sit about 3-4 days. I'm sure others have done this but I would like to add that it has only worked if you bury it about a foot in the ground. We usually just throw it in the rootings and cover it up. I've been taking hogs all year for tearing up our hay fields. What's crazy is that the sour corn still brings them in!

Good luck everyone!

I have tried sour mash(that will get you drunk just smelling of it) and the hogs will come to about 50 yards of the trap and stop.  Today I ran a trail of corn from where they are rooting at to the trap along with about 50 packs of old coolaid in a 3 gallon sprayer of water.  Maybe that will sweetin the deal for them!
