Savage is a good brand and makes a solid gun. Their rifles may not have all the bells and wistles but I bet it will shoot good enough to kill some deer. I personally have never owned a Savage but wouldn't shy away from buying one if I came across a good deal. The 30 06 caliber will be very versatile for you if you get to go after some lager game than whitetails. You can find plenty of different ammo brands for the 06 but I bet the 140 to 150gr bullets will do well in the rifle.

I have read several articles lately on Savage rifles. As a matter of fact one article found that the Savage in .270 was the most accurate right out the box of all the guns they tested. That says something to me. Go buy several brands of ammo in the same grain bullets and fire 3-5 rounds on different targets and see which one gives you the best group and then work off the best using that round to adjust your scope. Go with Winchester supreme,Hornady, etc and i'm sure you be quite happy.

I agree with Mike in general. I would try Hornady, Winchester and Federal.

Personally, I tried the Hornday SST, Winchester Silver Ballistic Tip, and Federal GameKing as hunting rounds in my .308. Each one is an excellent hunting round, it just depends on what flavor your rifle likes. Also, the grain will effect the results. This is not a cheap experimental process, but well worth the satisfaction of a well placed shot when it counts.
