QUESTION

What are the most common saltwater fish that you enjoy fishing for in Texas?

The first problem with this question is that I have found it near impossible to find a list of saltwater sportfish available in Texas. So, I created one below.

TPWD only lists the fish for which there are rules, limits, etc.

Some lists are written by people who talk about fish they catch for sport (not to eat); while others talk about fish they catch to eat (not sport); and many just don't care about the name of the fish they catch, they just like fishing on the Texas Coast.

Another factor that makes this list so difficult to create is that people have different names for the same fish (Dorado, Mahi Mahi, Dolphin).

Finally, there is some debate as to whether certain fish are "available" on the Texas Coast.

Sooooo.........

Below is a list of fish I have created. It would be very interesting to see people's comments about:

1) This fish doesn't exist in Texas to the best of your knowledge...
2) This fish exists, but no one really fishes for it...(if so, why?)
3) Yes, there are nine types of Grouper, but people only fish for three of those types (I used Grouper, but whether Grouper, Snapper, or other species of fish, please tell us which types of a certain species are most common.

I am really looking forward to hearing people's comments to this post.

Of course, if you know of any great guides that you have used when you mention a certain species, feel free to plug them or link to their site in your response.

The State also says we have Snook, but i've never seen one in Texas Waters. " I have caught the elusive Tripletail_ completely by accident though, I was shark fishing! -DORADO (Mahi, Mahi) is also called Dolphinfish in Texas waters. P.S....Gafftop are nasty creatures...their slime somehow works it's way 3 feet up the line and you nearly have to remove the line an re-tie to get the stinky slime off!

"It takes 32 muscles to frown, 17 to smile, but only 3 for a proper trigger pull."

Gafftop are tasty... if you don't know that's what you are eating. Wahoo should be at the top of the ist... :o) I just had a really good 2 day offshore trip out of Corpus. (9) Wahoo, (5) big Dorado, a small Yellowfin Tuna, a Sailfish (released), and a Shark (released).

Quite a few snook down here around Port Isabel area Mike.  Actually getting a mount from one I caught last year because if we have a freeze during the winter, they're gone.    I don't get to go down here a lot, but one of my buddies "lives" on the water.  They catch them quite regularly.
