Quail Walking Hunt with Heart of Texas (H.O.T.) Guided Hunts
One of our Members, Mr. Lenderman, found a Dove Hunt using our free “Find a Guide” search tool. He was organizing a group of hunters from Houston County, including his son. The guide was “H.O.T. Guided Hunts” which is owned and operated by Allen Morehouse. Mr. Lenderman asked Allen if I could join the party as an Outdoor Writer to document the hunt and write a Field Report about everyone involved. Allen said, “Yes.” Do you remember reading the Field Report? Well, that is because I didn’t write one. I arrived on location after following detailed directions, “The meeting location is on the SE Corner of the intersection of Hwy 171 and Hwy 31. This is the only stoplight in Hubbard. It would be very hard to miss.” I was greeted by fields of acres and acres of tall sunflowers with dove flying every which way. I was so excited. If you remember the day, a cold front was coming so we were nervous. Bottom line, there were too many hunters on the scene, literally something like 80+. We didn’t see as many dove as those that hunted in the morning. The dove we did see, were shot instantly by one of the many hunters. We got rained on by other people’s pellets more times than we got to shoot at a dove. However, like usual, I really enjoy being outdoors, sitting in nature, listening to the conversations between hunters, and I just like the smell of gun oil on my hands, so I had a good time. But some people were HUNGRY for dove and the grumbles from the hunters were evident. As I hopped back in the camo H2 to drive back to our family ranch in Crockett, Allen Morehouse waved me down (how do you think he recognized which guy was from www.TexasHuntFish.com?) He apologized for the rough start we got, for the number of hunters in our particular field, pointed out a bunch of guys who got their limit, and told me how many birds they had counted while scouting earlier in the week and invited me to come back Monday after the cold front blew through. Other than pointing out all of the people who were driving home with a bag full of dove, I was very impressed with how he engaged me, and his very sincere desire to make sure everyone had a good day. I thought he was just being nice about the Monday offer and of course I couldn’t make it, but he made the offer to someone else who walked up to us and they accepted and he told them where to meet. Since I couldn’t make Monday, he told me he would call me to bring Mr. Lenderman on an upland game bird or waterfowl hunt later in the season. Thus, here I am now writing this story titled, “Quail Walking Hunt.”
