I got this today:
Friends,
This is a rare opportunity to harvest a magnificent trophy buck.
This hunt is not for just anybody.
The buck was tagged at birth and let go in a large high fenced ranch.
This is not an animal in a small pen.
The owner of the ranch would like to sell a hunt for this buck.
If you are interested please let us know. Proceeds from the sale of this hunt will go to support our youth hunting program. Please call me for more details at 210-827-9802 or send me an email at info@mycoa.org
God Bless,
Michael Marbach

are we saying that the buyer can hunt all season for this buck or are we saying pick a weekend and good luck? How many acres are we talking about? Even if High Fenced, 10,000 acres is a lot of room to never see the buck.

i have a lease in mississippi 3000 acres. no feeders, just wild deer. i pay 350.00 a year and we take several nice bucks every year. i started on this lease in 1985 for 65.00 a year ! deer hunting should be affordable to all people, not just people with deep pockets for pen raised bucks. what is the sport in it ?

I believe it's the capitalistic world we live in right? If someone wants to pay $50,000 to shoot a buck then why not let them??

That would be cheep in Texas for one gun, one day, doe hunt !! Don't tell many about that or there will be someone getting your lease for $3500.00 per year.
Honest! harley91 count your blessings.
My hats off to the guy that can manage his or others property and make BIG bucks $$ . (hey, there is a pun there)

I can see Harley's point after living in New Mexico for such a long time ,28 years, and hunting public lands and paying small fees to hunt, drawings and all.
Then here in Texas, hearing about $2500 per gun sort of doesn't tempt me much. I will stick with hunting public lands.
I guess there is a place for buying the buck you want to shoot beforehand for a lot of people.

Allen,
I felt the need to respond to the capitalists out there from the poor folks perspective. First of all there are many factors which come to play when paying to hunt deer or for a lease which I completely understand; property tax etc. If you look at the way you did and say: hey if he wants to pay $50,000 for that buck let him...but then a buck that is 10-20 b&c less than that buck goes for $40,000 and so on. It drives prices up, ...up and down the scale. Next thing you know they want $1000.00 to shoot a doe
The land around Hagerman has tripled + in price since the big deer was killed up there a just few years back.
The place my dad used to lease was $150 in 1980, it is now $3500 each -no high fence, no feed, no house and now... no hunters its for sale.
What causes me heartache is that good people that love hunting and the outdoors are being priced out. I realize that the landowners and lessors are the ones doing the pricing, but if no one wants to pay that for it, it doesn't leased and the price has to be reduced.
If you look at when I joined this site....(original 2001) until now, you will see that I had few or no log-ins or posts. That is simply because I could not find a deer lease that was even remotely close to something I could afford.
People are hard pressed to trust someone else with $2500 for a hunt or even a lease. How many horror stories have you heard regarding bad lease deals where the owner was day leasing the land or day hunts where a hunter paid $1500 to shoot a buck and came home with nothing but empty pockets.
I for one have to work very hard for several weeks to make $1500 and that is for the bills...
Sorry I highjacked this posting..I had to get that off my chest, I feel better now!.....I can go back to normal..if its possible

I have one question for the folks against the cost of such hunt. " If that was your deer what would YOU charge?"There are places for all of us to hunt no matter what your income is.If a large trophy like that is out of your price range so be it. But dont blame the ranch owner for charging according to the market.

I have a 150 3/8 lifetime best on my wall harvested in 2005. In my mind Ican't comprehend seeing Mr Big as better, but I suppose if I did shoot a magnum monster buck I would change my mind. The chances of one being where I hunt is nil. Say, does that ear tag have the retail price and bar code?

David,
I hate to be the one to argue with you here but I must answer your question. These ranch owners are the ones that set the market. I know that no one has to pay it but someone with too much money on their hands will end up paying it. Then it snowballs from there. I believe everyone has a right to make a living and a profit, that is capitalism. However, does that mean that if the ranch owner has, let's just say for arguments sake, $5,000.00 in that deer. Is it then necessary for him to sell a hunt for this deer for let's say $25,000.00? That's a 500% difference. A 50% markup, which in any other business is almost unheard of , is only $7,500. It really honestly comes down to greed. I know that it's legal and popular but that still doesn't make it right. As for your particular question. I would sell a hunt for enought to pay for what I had in the deer plus a SMALL/FAIR frofit for myself.

the problem is that i don't "own" wildlife. we didn't start out owning the wildlife and we shouldn't own it now. the whitetail was here long before we , and our ancestors and their ancestors were here.
a pen raised deer has been fed, named, and has little fear of humans so what is the sport in it ? if this guy gets a million dollars for this animal, more power to him. but for us who like to go out and really enjoy the outdoors it's a slap in the face. i was at the hunters extravaganza and the ranches offering hunts had pictures of these trophy bucks with cigarettes in their mouths or some slob holding a beer up to it;s mouth who was probably half drunk when he shot the deer. this is deer shooting, not hunting. shows "no" respect for the animals!

harley91 raises a good point -- is this post about the opportunity to hunt a trophy or to simply shoot one? Assuming it is the former and if it is all for charity, then I hope it goes for (pun intended) big bucks . . .

Making it a business can keep the fields from being paved for more wal marts. If the property owner owns mega acres he needs to make it pay the taxes and a good lifestyle. I know I wouldnt pay $100 to shoot that ugly buck. I like more close to typical with maybe split brows or a couple kickers.
