Well, I am at home this weekend and can't stop thinking about the fact that I wish I was in the woods with my bow in hand.  Anyway, I figured that I would post these pics.  I found the shed antler walking to a stand in the middle of December 2004.  This past Feburaury my hunting buddy (Greg) and I were out scouting and we found a thicket back in the woods between two small creeks that had about 8 or 9 rubs on 3-4 inch trees, all within about a 25 square yard area.  We continued to scout and about 10-15 minutes later Greg hollered at me to come over and check out what he found.  Well, he came across a dead buck's skull and we were both pretty impressed with it since we hunt in Anderson County.  The only other part of the buck that we found was one side of it's jaw, which I aged at 5.5 years.  We were obviously disappointed to find a nice dead buck, espcially so close to where we had just found all of those nice rubs.  However, back when my Cuddeback scouting camera worked, I had it placed about 200 yards from where the rubs/dead buck were, and some raccoons triggered the camera, in the back ground was a very impressive 140 class ten point.  The 10 point's body was not completely filled out, and so I am guessing that at the time he was 3.5 to 4.5 years old, but probably 4.5 since his rack was so impressive.  So, at least I still feel like there is probably a good buck close to where all the rubs are located.  The shed anlter was found about 500-600 yards from where he died on the other side of an 18 acre lake.  I thought that the antlers looked similar, but figured that they were a different buck.  However, once I compared them, there was no doubt that it was the same buck.

Perfect match.  I hope you get one of his offspring or daddy.  Good luck!

I love finding sheds, kinda like a bonus. Very cool, hope you find another one of those big East Texas bucks to chase this fall.

I will be in your neck of the woods for rifle opener...my brother and I will be hunting the DCNF. We are taking off early Friday morning before opener to get a decent camping spot and maybe scout the Big Slough Wilderness area for some of those big East Texas swamp bucks. We will be camping at the camp off of HWY 21. We plan on doing some rattling and filming, hope we get lucky...pray for cold weather.

A buddy I hunt with was hunting the DCNF bow season 1998 and shot a nice 8 pt that went 126 and is in P&Y. He found one of the bucks sheds while he was tracking the buck after the shot and the buck would have been bigger the previous year. There was a drought in East Texas that year so the deer didn't get the same nutrition.
