I know this sounds bad, but I got so sick of shooting hogs in South Texas.  We got to were we would aim for the gut, so we didn't have to drag them off the road.

Don't be a duck.

It would be neat if a group from TexasHuntFish could get together for a hog hunt.

Would be productive in reducing the hog population and be a good time to visit.

Good info there, Country!  The heart is not as low on a hog as I was thinking and the lungs are high and forward.

Thanks!

I have a ranch and I just dont see why so many people hate wild hogs.  I think that they are cool.  They present a year long hunting opportunity, get real big and narly, taste great, and give you something else to see in the outdoors, not to mention another opportunity to shoot for those that are letting the deer population rest.

Now, we no longer own the farm land on the edge of our ranch, so maybee thats why they dont bother me.  I guess they can tear up crops but they dont destroy much at our ranch and we have TONS of them.  Aside from the spots of rooted ground, they just dont cause much trouble.  As long as you have steal legs on the feeders.  In a way, I have a certain respect for them as a wild animal and they seem to be smarter, with just as keen of senses, as most deer in a place that is not over hunted.

Anyways, if anyone agrees with me, then check out my post on hog hunting trips near CC.  I have alot to offer if you are interested in hog hunting.  I saw a post about a group trip, things could be discounted if enough came.  If my offer is not for you, then I am sure you could ask around untill you find some farmer that hates hogs and will let them go for $50 a pop.  But to me, I consider them a resource and have much more to offer.

Wanna know why people don't like hogs? Here's a dam good reason! This is my ankle last year. I wasn't hunting when it happened. I was walking across the pasture, leading my sheep to the field. The little bastard was laying in wait and came from behind me, and took me down. He flipped me right over so I landed feet up in the air, and head down. I had a tire brush in my hand that I carry when working with the livestock and I had to beat him off of me. My two rotts where there, but I called them off as they are(were) old girls and I didn;t want to have to take them to the vet at the same time I went to the ER. If I had thought I wouldn't make it out of that situation, for sure the dogs would have been given the okay to kill it. I tell ya' I left a blood trail from hell back to the house to get my rifle and shoot the pig. So, here ya go- one good reason people don't like hogs!

Oh! Forgot! Shot placement on hogs- with an arrow, quartering away hands down is best to get behind those ribs and to all the organs you can damage.

my mother is glad we don't have hogs on our place in west tx. but me I've try baiting with every kind of mix with no luck. hog wild&corn, jello&corn, diesel&corn, fermented mix, feed year round, in-heat scents (hog-pee). five later still no hogs. may be someday??? but i would shoot them in the head.

Funny you mention this cuz I have hogs across the river from me, and I know dam well they swim. They have never crossed over even though I have an old guilt and she goes into season. My friend across the river raises show pigs and he shoots the wild boars outside his back door all the time. Go figure? I've been in this house for 4 years, and no pigs. Just whitetail, Axis and I used to see a blackbuck in the winter but I have a fence and they don't jump fence. Shucks!

Whoops! Wish they had an edit button. We had 4 places until last year, and one was in Bandera county, out ridge route road. Hogs 1 mile away, but never there either. I just can't get lucky on buying property I guess.

Yes Kevin, a hog can and will do that to a person. I'm from Arkansas so I have dealt with hogs most of my life. They are nasty critters. Granted, they don't go around "hunting" humans just to attack but in the right situation they will tear ya up. Hogs are the very reason I refuse to go into the woods without some type of firearm. In deer season, I carry a .40 cal semi-auto with solid rounds and hollow points staggered in two magazines. You should get to know the anatomy of a hog and know how to help defend yourself against them. They are truly a dangerous critter.

TX_Kevin, I've been treed, charged, chased and cut. I love every minute of it! I learn everytime I go afield and have great adventures always. I'm known as the Hoghunter. I'm way beyond Passion, I'm obsessed! I also write outdoor adventure stories about my experiences, so you don't do the same things I do. A regular column is called PIGTALES-ADVENTURES IN HOGHUNTIN' for the EWA. Now, I came here to post a picture for the perfect arrow placement for any novice hoghunters out there. Animals will duck and arrow. The front of the animal goes down first, so your best chance to harvest and not hit high is like this picture I'm posting for you. Quartering away. Good Luck and good hunting!

See this hog ducked badly? If I'd a shot it broadside, I may not have found her as I would have hit her high with her ducking her front end that low. Shoot to the opposite shoulder.

My dad has some hogs coming to the feeder on his land.  I was planning on doing some hog hunting, never have hunted them before.  Thanks for such an informative thread.

Guns don't kill people....Its those pesky little bullets making lots of holes that all the blood leaks out of.

Ouch, Looks like a nasty cut.  Did it rip your achilles?  Glad to see your alright and still fighting the good fight against those pesky critters.  Very informative thread.  Got stuck in a tree stand with my bow last season for two hours after dark.  I had two 400 pound hogs trying to knock the legs out from under the lean-to while I was in the top.  All I had was my bow and I was running out of arrows fast.  I had shot a 150 pound little boar and they came a runnin' and a gruntin'.  My dad finally came to find me after I didn't come out of the woods and boy was I glad to see him.  Scared off the hogs for the night but I wasn't going through the thicket to try and find my hog that night.  Went back the next morning and the darn buzzards had already eaten him half up.  I don't like them and they don't like me but they sure are fun to shoot and even better to eat.
