I booked a 3 day Exotic/Whitetail hunt package. This hunt was for any horned exotic animal, unlimited hogs, unlimited bass fishing. Had it been whitetail season, it would have been any horned animal or whitetail buck, whitetail doe, unlimited hogs, hen turkey, and unlimited bass. If an additional horned exotic was taken a fee would be charged. The Lodge was beautiful! It was the home of the original ranchers built in the thirties. You will hunt on 16,000 acres in ground or tier blinds. They have 71 blinds throughout the ranch. The lodge was like stepping back into the old Spanish days. Yet it is well maintained and very clean. Families especially will enjoy this place. They make sure everyone is happy including the kids. Now for the game. I was hoping for an Axis Deer, and possibly a Hog or two. My three days started in with an afternoon hunt followed by the morning hunt. Day 1 afternoon, I saw 6 Axis does, one Fallow doe, and two Axis bucks. The bucks weren't the size I wanted so I passed. Day 1 morning I passed on a huge boar (still kicking myself) and harvested a smaller boar for the meat. Day 2 afternoon, saw a Sika spike a Sika doe and passed on it. Day 2 morning, saw a Sika doe and could smell some sheep in the area. Got ousted out of the blind because of swarm (50,000+) of daddy long legs decided it was their place. (This is Texas you know.) They don't bite but they do like the shady spots. Make sure your in a blind that gets sun and gets warm. Day 3 afternoon, my guide dropped me off at a blind after we saw 6 Axis deer around it. 5 minutes after he left, 12 of them spooked including 3 nice sized Axis bucks. A smaller buck came back and I harvested him. Several hours later a HUGE BOAR came through but I was not able to get on target in time. Day 3 Morning, I was in a Tier blind and had 20 plus sheep of several different species all around me. I picked the best looking one for mounting and harvested a Texas Apricot Dall Sheep. This was my second horned animal so a fee was due. It was worth it! The longest shots here will be under 200 yards. Bring a thermos for the blinds as it gets very hot depending on the season. I was there June 26th. If you have a video camera I would get a window mount and bring it. You will be able to record all types of animal and capture your harvest on video. Animal care was done by my guide. He even made arrangements for the taxidermist to pick up my animals. He then transported the meat to a local game processor who made arrangements with me to ship the custom processed meat to my front door 1700 miles away. If your looking for a hunt to start your son/daughter/wife out on, this is the place to go. Comfortable beds, shower/bath, and good meals. Written by: Glenn Wong, wendijw@aol.com
