The US Navy test fires a rail gun with a power of 10,64 megajoule, accelerating the projectile to over 2500 meters per second.  To give you an idea how powerful this is...it takes a power of 1 joule to send an apple 1 meter up into the air.

The gun uses electromagnetic energy instead of explosive chemical propellants to fire a projectile farther and faster.
