Succulent forbs withered on the drought-stricken Texas landscape this year, prompting predictions that the health of deer would plummet.  But deer brought to wild game processors have largely been healthy, some carrying good stores of body fat.

Texas Parks and Wildlife fire-fighting personnel were continuing with clean up work at Bastrop State Park Thursday, having saved almost all the historic Depression-era structures on the 6,000-acre park just east of fire-ravaged Bastrop.

Cabela's Incorporated (NYSE: CAB) and the City of Allen broke ground Thursday on what will be the third Cabela's store in Texas, joining the Fort Worth and Buda locations.  Cabela's expects to open the 100,000-square-foot store located on Cabela Drive between U.S. Highway 75 and Allen Station Parkway, on the southern border of The Village at Allen, in early spring of 2011.

Following the conclusion of the Texas Wildlife Short Course, the Texas Wildlife Association's Regions 5, 6, 7 (Post Oak Savannah, Pineywoods, and Coastal Prairies) will be holding the annual Texas Big Game Awards Sportsmen's Celebration.

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department has completed a major revision of its Land and Water Resources Conservation and Recreation Plan, which is now available to the public. The year-long process created 12 regional forums based on river watersheds to promote dialogue and joint planning with outside stakeholders and field staff.
