Anthony Matarese, Jr. has become the 20th Sporting Clays National Champion, beating more than 1400 shooters for the top prize and edging former champion Wendell Cherry by one target. The four-day, 300-target main event, sanctioned by the National Sporting Clays Association, concluded Sunday evening at the National Shooting Complex in San Antonio.

The 20th annual Sporting Clays National Championship got underway at the National Shooting Complex in San Antonio today, with a record number of shooters competing on four fields in the main event. At the end of the day's 75-target first round, two shooters led the field of over 1400 shooters with perfect scores.

Mother nature has thrown a curve ball named Ike at more than 200 anglers headed for the 2008 BoatU.S. National Collegiate Bass Fishing Championship (NCBFC) on Lake Lewisville, Texas, but the September 18-20 event remains scheduled as planned because forecasts look good by tournament time.

The field is set for the 2008 BoatU.S. National Collegiate Bass Fishing Championship (NCBFC), with 106 two-person teams representing 57 schools from 23 states registered to participate. The full-field enrollment makes it the largest college bass tournament ever held.

College bass anglers are likely not the crown jewels of many campus sports programs yet, but the 200 competing in next month's 2008 BoatU.S. National Collegiate Bass Fishing Championship (NCBFC) are certainly getting some royal treatment as a result of their participation.
