Hoping for a shot at the 2012 Olympics, 18 young trap and skeet shooters from 11 states yesterday wrapped up four days of intensive training and evaluation by U.S. coaches.

The 20th annual Sporting Clays National Championship got underway at the National Shooting Complex in San Antonio today, with a record number of shooters competing on four fields in the main event. At the end of the day's 75-target first round, two shooters led the field of over 1400 shooters with perfect scores.

Anthony Matarese, Jr. has become the 20th Sporting Clays National Champion, beating more than 1400 shooters for the top prize and edging former champion Wendell Cherry by one target. The four-day, 300-target main event, sanctioned by the National Sporting Clays Association, concluded Sunday evening at the National Shooting Complex in San Antonio.
