Morning Glory - Old Mexico

Morning Glory - Old Mexico
Summary:

What a beautiful deer. It is pretty amazing how nice the deer are south of the border considering how much simpler the management practices are on the average ranch - and how much cheaper it is to go hunting there.

That is a great job! That hog looks like a real nice trophy.

How many acres per hunter do you recommend?

Summary:

I think you really want to consider:

what region of Texas (differences is habitat, water, etc.)

is there supplemental feed or food plots?

are you just looking to shoot a deer and have fun or do you really care about mature trophy deer hunting?

and finally, from a safety perspective, think about rifle hunters and their proximity to each other and whether or not you mandate staying in the blind because of how close hunters might be to each other.

With all that said I think you end up with ONE high quality buck per 500 acres in South Texas and West Texas; and maybe ONE per 300 acres in East Texas.

The Hill Country seems different because there are so many deer and so many small properties and if you have water, the deer congregate from all surrounding areas. In general the deer are the poorest quality, but I have seen places with NO quality deer and I have seen times (like right now around good water and protein feeders) when I have seen four great quality hill country bucks at the same time on a 82 acre free range parcel.

Summary: I am sitting in a tower blind in South Texas with Justin Blalock. He is on his first hunt - hog and coyote - today at the Marisol Ranch on the Nueces River just outside of Uvalde, courtsey of Robert Dullnig. He shot a gun for the first time last night. We took him to the range and taught him basic gun safety with a lever action 30-30, .44 pistol, .223 semi-auto rifle, 30-06 bolt action, and 12 Guage Shotgun with slugs. We haven't seen any pigs yet but I will keep you posted.

"Almost Live Report" Texas Trophy Hunters Association (TTHA) Houston Show
Summary:

The next booth that grabbed my interest was the Texas Whitetail Classic “Big Buck” Contest, with the tag line “The Largest Statewide Whitetail Tournament”.

Ok – who needs another Big Buck Contest?

You know you are never going to win unless you sell your 50ft yacht and spend that money on a genetically enhanced, artificially bred, steroid injected, tied down with really strong dental floss, South Texas, high fenced buck that has a deer tag and GPS locator placed in it’s rectum.

Well – Bubba Ammann (big brother of Charlie Ammann who works for San Miguel Outdoors) and his wife, Chanda Ammann have an answer – a really good answer.

What if we divided Texas into 8 geographical regions? As a result, you only compete with hunters in your region with two divisions per region and 18 categories per division. Thus, there are 500 chances to win (my math said 8x2x18=288 but maybe there is another little secret I don’t know).

Win what you ask? $250,000 of prizes! Hmmmmmm. That smells good.

Look at the photo and you can read the different regions. Go to www.TexasWhitetailClassic.com if you want to register but don’t forget to tell them you heard about it here at www.TEXASHUNTFISH.com.
