The Brown Bear 7.62x54R ammo is good.I am not fond of the metal cases.I have not had a problem with it so far...(my thought)..PRVI soft point ammo is better. Both ammo brands are ok...As with all ammo after shooting in your gun...clean the chamber and barrel good so you do not have problems later...always practice safety and a clean rifle will last you a lot longer ...

Crossbow Injury Survey

Crossbow Injury Survey
Summary:

Friend of mine did it with my crossbow took off about a third of his thumb. He had shot the bow about 20 times before it happened. I had told him before hand make sure you do not put your fingers on top. People get used to shooting a rifle all their life and forget you cannot lay the thumb along the top where the string comes accross. This happens because people are concentrating on the target that they lay the thumb where the string comes accross. Need a guard so people cannot do this. Now once you have done it and your thumb is gone I guess you don't have to worry about it hitting it anymore. You Basically have a thumb removal kit in your hands if not done properly SD

Recomend a good knife for field dressing deer?

Summary:

Tom:

I've owned my Marlin (Glenfield) Lever .30-30 new since 1978 and have just over 100 empty cases.  I still remember going to the range to sight it in the first time and burned through a whole box of 20 rounds for sighting it in and shoorting the remainder of the rounds to just shoot it.  So, over the 34 years I've owned it, I've averaged 3 rounds per year.

If you have a similar experience, it will be a long while before you have enough empty cases to reload.

During last year's deer season, I found the scope ring clamp screws had loosened (after 34 years) and I replaced it with a new Nikon Buckmaster Side focus Mildot 4.5-14 X 40 (Nikon Part# 6469) and bore sighted it by removing the bolt, steadying the rifle and looking through the barrel at a neighbor's mail box; then adjusting the scope reticles to coincide with the same place on the mailbox.  I believe my bore sighting is close enough to print fairly close to the bullseye, but even if the bullet just hits the target, I will use the vector from the bullet hole to the bullseye to adjust the scope for both windage and elevation.  I don't intend to use more than 3 rounds to finish sighting in the scope.  With the Mildot reticle, I can now accurately adjust for windage, elevation and bullet drop by knowing the ballistics of the round I am shooting (Hornady's LeverEvolution 160 grain polymer tip projectile).

whats your hunting rifle cal?

Summary:

Lever Action .30-30 with Hornady's LeverEvolution Ammunition in 160 grain projetile.  When zeroed at 200 yards, the projectile is 3 inches high at 100 yards and drops 12.1 inches at 300 yards.  At 300 yards, the projectile still has 1699 ft/lbs or energy and is traveling 1025 fps.  Bullet shot from a 24" test barrel.  When bullet is fired from a 20" lever carbine, expect a 25 fps decline in velocity for every inch shorter than 24" (1599 fps from my 20" barrel).

I have a Weatherby Synthetic Vanguard in .30-06 and used it one time to kill a deer.  Too much meat ruined and won't do that again.

For shots out to 300 yards, it's my trusted Glenfield Lever Action .30-30 for shooting deer, elk and moose - 330 yard bull moose drops from LeverEvolution with .30-30 160 grain bullet.

Observer Public Land Permit?

Summary:

I believe as long as she's not shooting or holding birds she's ok. I wouldn't even hand her the gun. All it takes is a game warden to see her with a gun, and she's considered a hunter.

Hog or deer best for beginner Hunter

Summary:

I would go for the hogs first. They are abudant, easy to find a place to hunt them, cheaper, and its year round. I would improve my shooting skills with pigs during the summer and then try deer in the winter.
