Cull Buck

Cull Buck
Summary: Man what a week. I got to accompany a good friend to his 10,000 acre ranch south of Brackettville once again, this time with the bucks running does. The first morning it was raining, and I had to run back to Hondo for a videoconference at work. No matter, it was raining pretty good, so I rationaliz...

Yearling Spikes?

Summary: What are your thoughts on the management and the harvesting of yearling spike bucks? Shoot 'em? Or, let 'em grow and decide later? If there are special circumstances please say so.

What Scope?

Summary: Ok, I just traded for a Remington 700 BDL 7 mag. What's a good low cost scope I can pickup for it that will work reasonably well without breaking the bank? I shoot a bow more than a gun, so I won't be shooting it that much.

Im looking for a new bow

Summary:

There are a number of upper end archery shops that carry both Bowtech and Mathews. Most everyone will tell you to shoot 'em all, and pick the one you like best.

Anyone that tells you to buy one over the other is not doing you a service.

I had the same question back in January of '08, and did exactly that. I shot the Hoyt Katera, the Elite GTO, the 82nd Airborne, the 101st Airborne, and the DXT. In doing all of that I decided that the speed bows just weren't for me. I bought a DXT and I love it. It had all that I wanted - super light weight, short A2A, and fast enough for me.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that my DXT lost it's virginity opening weekend...

Going back to a longbow

Summary: As time passes by, I find myself looking more at the longbows and recurves than at the fine new compound bows. I'd like to start thinking about getting into the longbows and working at shooting them, and put the old compound up for a while. Even though I have sights on my bow, I find myself using ...

Priced right out of hunting

Summary:

Hardy said that I spoke of what the land owners could GIVE, but that he hasn't seen where I would be willing to sacrifice something. Since I am not a land owner I can't donate the land or a hunt. For the less fortunate, and in the interest of perpetuating hunting, I'd be willing to serve as a guide as much as I am able and qualified to do, help the hunter to understand the proper shot when it presents itself, help to track deer, clean the deer and teach the hunter how to do so, would be willing to help cook around a camp, and clean up stuff too. I would be willing to spend time with folks to teach them to shoot a bow (this I am qualified to do). Financially there’s not a lot I can do, but I do have some knowledge I’d be quite willing to share.

William, you are right about there always being those who are less fortunate than us. Someone always has something to be thankful for, even those out on the street. I may not be able to afford a wonderful lease, but I’ve been able to hunt in my lifetime, and I’ve been able to enjoy seeing others do so too.

Keeping this positive and actually thinking about solving problems instead of attacking people I apparently don’t like, the association for the preservation of hunting seems to have some merit to me.

Maybe there’s a price per acre based on regions of the state and on predefined levels of improvement that could be agreed upon through the meeting of the association by both hunters and landowners. Perhaps this agreement would be for 3 years at a time and increases would be proposed and voted on by the whole of the association, land owners and hunters alike with cases being made. In this manner there is no perception of one being taken – either the hunter or the land owner.

I know there are those among us who can come up with levels of ranches who wish to lease to the association, again based on region and levels of improvements, all with the intent to preserve and more importantly, perpetuate hunting.

There, I am done, and no attacks.

Switched to a Rip Cord, threw away the biscuit...

Summary: When I was 14 years old I had a nice eight point appear, I raised my old Jennings Super T and as I drew the arrow slipped off the old flipper rest and made the tale-tell sound. The buck took three big steps and was out of sight. Never got to full draw. Last weekend I was in my pop up blind and a m...

Proposal to eliminate the minimum peak draw weight requirement

Proposal to eliminate the minimum peak draw weight requirement
Summary:

I bought my son a PSE Spider youth bow that went up to 40 pounds when he was about 10. He worked his way up to 40 pounds. Then he bought a Parker Buckhunter that went up to 60. He can now shoot the bow pretty well at 60 pounds.

Folks, before my son could draw the minimum weight, he was not a good enough shot to shoot a deer. It was right that he had to wait.

Now he can draw and shoot my bow. This next year he's probably going to want to take my bow and make me shoot his. Uh, no.

While today's speed bows might make a difference at 30 pounds, I am not certain that the average bow does. I do not like the speed of his Parker Buckhunter for "serious" hunting, although I am absolutely certain that a deer can be killed, and a complete pass through can be achieved. But, that's at 60 pounds. At 40 pounds, it seems like he'd need to be pretty close to achieve the same results. At 30 pounds, I don't think I'd like to see a deer shot with that bow.

LeveRevolution bullets?

LeveRevolution bullets?
Summary:

I don't believe I will ever shoot a different round in my 30-30. I love the LeveRevolution.

With 30 minutes left in the season, this old south Texas 8 pointer comes down the sendero. I finally get him to turn broadside at about 120 yards. This was a big bodied south Texas buck. I hit him just behind the shoulder and the bullet went in and out, exiting in the same place on the other side. While he bled alot, he only ran about 15 yards before giving up the ghost. No tracking needed.

This old buck is now at the taxidermist and he's going to rebuild his brow tines for me.

I give the LeveRevolution in 30-30 two thumbs up. It works like they claim, and it makes a 30-30 a more valid hunting weapon.

Pop Up Blinds with Shoot-Thru Mesh

Summary: I would like to hear some comments on the use of pop ups with shoot-thru mesh. I've heard some say their success rate has really gone up since switching to the pop ups. It seems as though it would change the arrow flight to some degree. Yes? No?
