Guns during bowseason?

Summary:

It is unlawful to be in possession of a firearm while hunting with a broadhead HUNTING point during the Archery-Only season, except a person licensed to carry a concealed handgun in Texas may carry a concealed handgun.

NOTE: A firearm may be possessed in camp, in a motor vehicle, or while hunting lawful game other than whitetail or mule deer and turkey (e.g., exotics, feral hogs, squirrels).

Archery and crossbow equipment may NOT be used to hunt deer during the Muzzleloader-Only Deer Season.

H.B. 968~Allowing Crossbows During Archery Season

Summary:

The Governor signed HB968 on Saturday May 23, 2009.

"We should all be looking for productive and innovative ways to get more hunters into the field, not restricting access to the great outdoors and its plentiful bounty. The crossbow bill is just such an instrument and I am proud to have affixed my signature to another tool which will promote more Texans to get out and enjoy the Spirit of the Wild!"
Governor Rick Perry

What a shame

Summary: Is this good or bad? Sounds like it might be great hunting next season if we get some rain on that fertile soil.

A Day Late and a Dollar Short

A Day Late and a Dollar Short
Summary:

I think a beautiful 10point like that is nicer than most hugh scoring non-typicals. I am excited for you already for next season. I would go with 4.5 also.

mule deer

Summary:

I hunted with Keith Oliver season before last. The deer were good considering the lack of rain over the previous two years. However, after last years excellent spring rains, I am told this past season was much better. Texas Hunt Fish Turkey Hunt

Summary:

Spring Turkey is my favorite time of year to be outdoors in Texas. Somehow, this year, the kids Spring Break, Easter, Wedding Anniversary, and a family gathering the last weekend of April at our ranch in East Texas has now led to three cancelled turkey hunts!!!! I have been looking forward to our return visit since you posted this invitation, I just had to cancel our 3rd annual turkey hunt in Ozona, and last weekend I missed opening weekend with my cousins Lynn & John Lenderman - but they had a great time. AAAGGGGGGHHHH!!!!!

Thank you very much for the invite.

Why are all the important family holidays during hunting season?

National Park Service Evaluation of the Christmas Mountains tract for Hunting Potential

Summary:

Interesting, this is a comment on the website of the property owners mentioned above, after all of the discussion of how poor the quality of hunting is...

Decmber 23, 2007

The 2007 General Mule Deer Season began with an unseasonable snow storm which made some of the roads slick. But that didn't stop our hunters, as the resulting ruts proved.

There were reports of large Aoudad kills in Cedar Springs, although there were none brought into the ranch cold locker.

132 hunters registered with the ranch office. 36 deer and 1 javelina were stored in the cold locker. In general the deer were large and healthy looking. There were numerous fine looking racks.

How was the weekend?

Summary: Whether or not I get a big buck, I am excited to thin out my doe population with a bow. One of my problems/blessings this season is I have a superb turkey flock settled on our land right now. The acreage is too small to make a lot of gun noise without running off the turkey. However, one loud bang if I see a real nice mature buck will be ok. Otherwise, I am going to try using compound during bow season and crossbow during rifle season to keep the noise down - and of course write some good product reviews.

Therma-cell?

Summary:

My solution, having been eaten alive many times, is I dress like I would for turkey season, full body, light weight, including full-face, cover. I wear long socks, long sleeves, everything. Yes I am hot, but the bugs don't get many bites.

Antler Restrictions

Summary: Actually, in last year's, or maybe the year before's TPWD Outdoor Annual (the handbook you get when you buy your license), there was a great article that answered Hardy's question. Sadly, if I remember correct, the average age of a deer harvested in Texas was 2.5 yrs. The 13 inch rule is for sure better than nothing and the results from the "experimental counties", as doubledrop mentioned, was overwhelmingly positive, which is why they are implementing the rule state wide gradually. Ironically, along with the 13" rule, I wish they would open up doe season more so that places like East Texas. Our ranch has a 10:1 doe/buck ratio on free range, and the doe season is only Thanksgiving Weekend unless you have a permit. If they opened doe season up, the meat hunters would be happy. Sadly, I have never seen a nice, mature deer in my life on our land in East Texas. But maybe the 13" rule will help that change.
