I always wanted to go on a Prairie Dog hunt, sounds like a lot of fun. I was checking around and found a place that is a longway from me but the price was very reasonable. The more people that go the cheaper it gets. That would be a great off season hunt for the forum. With 8 guys it gets pretty darn cheap for the hunt and lodging. If you put 4 to a vehicle the gas wouldn't be that bad. Hogs are backSummary: I spoke with my dad on Sunday afternoon and he said the hogs are really tearing up the ranch again. I hope with all the feeders up and running again the hogs will stay around. I'm headed back down this weekend to refill the feeders and replace the batteries to keep them around. I fired up for the up...
Seriously considering Lake MeredithSummary: Allen, to answer some of you questions...ATVs in designated areas only. The area is 45,000 acres total but I think that includes the lake. The lake is the best Walleye lake in Texas. The Duck and Goose hunting is supposed to be awesome. There should be some quail and pheasant on the area. It should be a great trip but I think the rifle season with the cooler temps and available bird and waterfoul hunting would be better and nicer for camping purposes. I saw nothing about hogs but it is the only public Muledeer hunting in Texas. I suggest a good pair of binos or a spotting scope if you have it for spot and stalk hunting. Lets go get em!
Learn all about Dove Strips here!Summary: Thanks John, I appreciate your quick response. I have the perfect place for planting the dove strips. The area is several acres bordered on the east and south sides by large oaks, has a powerline running thru the middle, a large tank on the west side and large mesquite trees on the north. The dove are there during the late season but don't really have any kind of food to hold them in one general area. This area is near my duck blind so I'm hoping to have some mixed bag hunts during the late season.
Hunters exravaganzaSummary:
I have never been because it is usually on Bow Season opening weekend but I may make a run to the SA show on 12-14. That will be the last weekend of summer for my daughter but she will just have to tough it out and I know there will be plenty for her to do at the Extravaganza. Maybe we can get a group of THFF members together for a day of fun? Food plotsSummary: I was looking into the http://www.buckforage.com/, supposed to be some really good stuff . If you plant it along with their Buck Forage Chicory it supposed to be a great all season plot for Texas. But, for $100 per acre I think it is too steep for my blood. Last year I planted Biologic-Green Patch Plus and the deer were all over it all season long. You can get 10 lbs of Biologic at Walmart for about $6.50 which will plant 1/4 acre, that is $26 bucks an acre, not a bad price. I bought some of the Green Patch Plus last night that I'm going to mix with a couple hundred lbs of Seed Oats for a plot out at the ranch. I was thinking of planting this around the tank also, do you think the ducks would feed on it also?
Hogs in Centerville?Summary: I've seen some deer between 140 and 150 out of the DCNF but they are few and far between. My best is a 120 class 8pt and my buddy shot a P&Y 8pt that went 126. About 5 years ago I saw a 140 class buck during bow season but did not get a shot. My brother and our buddy saw what they said was a 150 class buck chasing a doe the day before season opener but we never caught a glimps of him during the season.
