Canada and a number of U.S. states have imposed movement restrictions or additional entry requirements for horses from Texas after equine piroplasmosis, a tick-transmitted blood disease of equine animals, such as horses, donkeys, mules and zebras, was detected in South Texas in mid-October.  Equine piroplasmosis may be carried and transmitted by as many as 15 species of ticks.  Although ticks have been collected from the South Texas ranch for testing, final results are not complete, and it is not known whether any of the ticks can serve as a host for the disease.

A tick-borne disease known as equine piroplasmosis has been confirmed on a ranch in South Texas.  Additional testing is being conducted to determine the extent of infection.  Horses on the ranch are quarantined to their premises, and a thorough disease investigation is underway. 

A mountain lion was spotted behind an El Paso County hospital adjacent to Franklin Mountain. It was “just sitting there” and would not leave, a caller reported. El Paso Game Warden Ray Spears enlisted the assistance of Game Warden Mike Legarretta, and they arrived to find not one but two mountain lions (perhaps a mother and a large offspring).

Although rain has been received across most of the state, the drought effects on the land and natural resources still linger. Plus, living in Texas, landowners and land managers know drought is never far away so being prepared to manage your land, livestock and wildlife is an important aspect of any ranch management plan.

Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD), a fatal, degenerative brain wasting of elk, white-tailed and mule deer, has not been detected in Texas, but maintaining surveillance for the condition is essential for animal disease response and trade purposes.  The Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC), the state’s livestock and poultry health regulatory agency, has proposed new regulations to ensure adequate CWD surveillance of captive and free-ranging elk moved within the state. 

Visitors from Latin America, Europe and Canada joined american farmers and ranchers at the first San Antonio International Farm and Ranch Show at the Freeman Coliseum near downtown San Antonio, Texas. More than two hundred exhibitors joined nearly 5,000 visitors to preview state-of-the-art technology in farming and ranching equipment.

The Texas Deer Association (TDA) is pleased to announce the next stop on its statewide tour to promote more affordable hunting will be in Katy, Texas, just outside of Houston. TDA will showcase its all-new Hunt for Less program at the Bass Pro Shop in Katy, Texas, on Saturday, October 24, 2009, from 10 a.m. to 4 pm.
