Summary:
I agree with both of you in terms of the thrill of the "hunt". I also agree that a free range Aoudad hunt is one of the hardest, most satisfying hunts you can do in Texas. I have hunted many aoudad, for countless days of walking and spotting, and never shot a trophy and always come home dreaming of the next time. I also think that coyote/bobcat and spring turkey hunting are two of the most undervalued, exciting hunts that you can go on in Tx. NEW "Find a Guide or Lease" WizardSummary: We agree strongly with all of your comments. The advanced search function will be back. We removed it for now because so many leases and guides have data entry errors that only a fraction of the valid results were showing up. This issue - along with the issue of there being some outdated leases are related. Our current plan is to email and call on the phone every single Ranch and Guide and ask them to review their listing and make any appropriate changes. Thank you for taking the time to comment.
Texas Hunt Fish Turkey HuntSummary:
Spring Turkey is my favorite time of year to be outdoors in Texas. Somehow, this year, the kids Spring Break, Easter, Wedding Anniversary, and a family gathering the last weekend of April at our ranch in East Texas has now led to three cancelled turkey hunts!!!! I have been looking forward to our return visit since you posted this invitation, I just had to cancel our 3rd annual turkey hunt in Ozona, and last weekend I missed opening weekend with my cousins Lynn & John Lenderman - but they had a great time. AAAGGGGGGHHHH!!!!! Thank you very much for the invite. Why are all the important family holidays during hunting season? National Park Service Evaluation of the Christmas Mountains tract for Hunting PotentialSummary:
Interesting, this is a comment on the website of the property owners mentioned above, after all of the discussion of how poor the quality of hunting is... Decmber 23, 2007 The 2007 General Mule Deer Season began with an unseasonable snow storm which made some of the roads slick. But that didn't stop our hunters, as the resulting ruts proved. There were reports of large Aoudad kills in Cedar Springs, although there were none brought into the ranch cold locker. 132 hunters registered with the ranch office. 36 deer and 1 javelina were stored in the cold locker. In general the deer were large and healthy looking. There were numerous fine looking racks. Anybody going to the Texas Shootout in Feb?Summary: The VICENTE PENA & TEXASHUNTFISH.COM OUTDOOR VIDEO PRODUCTION TEAM WILL BE ON THE SCENE. We are hoping to document the experience of so many bowhunters coming together on such a famous ranch. We want to video interview people who have been coming for years, we want to video people who came from far away, and we want to video people going out on their hunt and coming back with their trophies. Good luck and keep an eye out for the TexasHuntFish.com F450 and say "hi" on camera.
Antler RestrictionsSummary: Actually, in last year's, or maybe the year before's TPWD Outdoor Annual (the handbook you get when you buy your license), there was a great article that answered Hardy's question. Sadly, if I remember correct, the average age of a deer harvested in Texas was 2.5 yrs. The 13 inch rule is for sure better than nothing and the results from the "experimental counties", as doubledrop mentioned, was overwhelmingly positive, which is why they are implementing the rule state wide gradually. Ironically, along with the 13" rule, I wish they would open up doe season more so that places like East Texas. Our ranch has a 10:1 doe/buck ratio on free range, and the doe season is only Thanksgiving Weekend unless you have a permit. If they opened doe season up, the meat hunters would be happy. Sadly, I have never seen a nice, mature deer in my life on our land in East Texas. But maybe the 13" rule will help that change.
Moon Phase CalenderSummary:
Allen and I spoke with Danny Smith of the Smith Ranch in Centerville this past weekend and his opinion is that full moons are not a great time to hog hunt because the hogs move very late and not for very long. In his experience - and he runs a Hog Hunting Lodge - during New Moons the hogs move in the late afternoon and most of the night. His URL is www.hoghunting.com and he seems to know what he is talking about since he is booked guiding Hog Hunts seven days a week from October to April. I would love to hear other people's experiences? 193 results found Next Page >Showing results 1 through 10
